WOW Forever Launch - First Hour Checklist: What to Do the Moment Servers Open

GuideWoW Forever launch first hour checklist

The WoW Forever launch is tonight. World of Warcraft: Forever opens worldwide at 3:00 p.m. PST on Wednesday, November 4 (23:00 UTC) - midnight in Central Europe and Thursday morning in Asia and Australia. When the servers open, thousands of players hit the same starting zones in the same minute, and the first hour sets the pace for the whole night.

This is our first hour checklist: what to do in the hour before launch, the choices you make when you first log in, the settings to fix in your first five minutes (some defaults changed in the final build), how to get through a crowded starting zone, and what to plan before you hit level 10. Every step links to the guide or tool on Forever Upgrades that covers it in depth.

WoW Forever launch: Wednesday, November 4, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. PST (23:00 UTC) - Thursday, November 5, in Europe, Asia and Australia.

The WoW Forever launch, minute by minute.

WoW Forever launch: the first hour at a glance

  • Before launch: the game is down for maintenance from 10:00 a.m. to about 3:00 p.m. PST. Have the client installed and updated, and your ruleset, faction, race and class decided.
  • Minute 0: pick your ruleset, then your Experience Preset (Blizzard suggests Enhanced if you're unsure) and your character models.
  • Minutes 1-5: new spells no longer go on your action bars by themselves, and bags no longer equip themselves - set both up straight away.
  • Minutes 5-35: quest through your starting zone. Respawn rates are faster there for launch, so crowds clear quickly.
  • Minutes 35-50: train new spell ranks, learn your professions and keep the gear upgrades from quests.
  • Minutes 50-60: plan your first talent points (they start at level 10), your Legacy perks and who you'll group with.

Before the servers open: your last hour

According to the Battle.net app's maintenance notice, as players quoted it on Blizzard's forums, WoW Forever goes down for maintenance at 10:00 a.m. PST on November 4 and service is expected back at about 3:00 p.m. PST - the launch time. That window is when the live game is switched on; it isn't a delay. Use the last hour before it ends to get everything ready:

  • Install and update. Open the Battle.net app, select World of Warcraft, choose World of Warcraft: Forever in the Game Version menu (not the beta) and let any update finish. A launch-day patch is common, and you don't want to download it at 3:00 p.m. Our WoW Forever release guide has the full install steps.
  • Check your PC. Some older graphics cards won't start Forever at all - see the WoW Forever system requirements. Playing on a handheld? Our Steam Deck guide covers the setup.
  • Update your addons for the live client, or start without them and add them back once you're in. Our best WoW Forever addons list covers the launch essentials.
  • Decide with your group. Agree on a ruleset and faction with your friends or guild now, not at the login screen.
  • Send your Invite-A-Friend code. Upgrade packs came with launch codes that let a friend play from November 4 to 11 with no subscription - launch night is when they're most useful.

Minute 0: logging in

The first login asks you a few things Classic never did. Blizzard's launch announcement explains each one:

  • Ruleset. There are no realm lists. You pick one of four rulesets - Normal, PvP, Roleplay or Roleplay PvP - and everyone on it shares one world. Hardcore comes some time after launch. On the PvP and Roleplay PvP rulesets your account can only have characters of one faction, so your first character there decides it. Our WoW Forever PvP server tips explain what that means for leveling.
  • Experience Preset. You choose Classic or Enhanced. Blizzard's advice is to start with Enhanced if you're not sure, and you can change the settings later in the options.
  • Character models. Every new character can use High Definition or Standard Definition models. It only changes how your character looks.
  • Names. Without realms, each character has a two-part name, and the full combination is unique in your region. If you reserved names before launch, those characters are waiting for you - still at level 1.

Still choosing a class? Our WoW Forever classes guide covers all nine, the WoW Forever tier list ranks every spec, and every race and class combination lists what you can play - including Orc Mages, Undead Paladins and Dwarf Shamans. For race, check the best race shown on each spec ranking: the racials changed again on November 2, and our final build roundup explains how.

Minutes 1-5: fix these settings first

Blizzard's final pre-launch build changed a few defaults that will catch you out in your first minutes. Destructoid's summary of the November 2 development notes lists them:

  • New spells don't go on your bars any more. Learning a spell no longer adds it to your action bars automatically. Open your spellbook after every visit to the trainer and drag the new spells where you want them.
  • Bags don't equip themselves. A new bag stays in your inventory until you drag it into a bag slot.
  • Controllers work. WoW Forever is fully controller-compatible, and you can set movement, spells and interactions in Edit Mode and the Options menu.

While you're there, set your keybinds, turn on the action bars you want, and join your zone's chat and the LFG channel - you'll want them for groups later. If you use an addon to export your character, our free Forever Upgrades Export addon sends your gear and talents to our sims in one click.

Tip: if an addon throws errors on launch night, turn it off for the evening rather than fighting it. Addon authors usually update within a day or two of a launch.

Minutes 5-35: getting through your starting zone

Every race starts in its own zone, as in Classic, except the Skyborne, who get Zephras Isle (levels 1 to 12) - and the Skyborne need the Skyborne Heroic Pack or a higher edition:

  • Human: Northshire, in Elwynn Forest.
  • Dwarf and Gnome: Coldridge Valley, in Dun Morogh.
  • Night Elf: Shadowglen, in Teldrassil.
  • Orc and Troll: the Valley of Trials, in Durotar.
  • Tauren: Camp Narache, in Mulgore.
  • Undead: Deathknell, in Tirisfal Glades.
  • Skyborne: Zephras Isle, on both factions.

Starting zones will be the busiest places in the game tonight. Blizzard's final build raised respawn rates for launch, fastest in the starting zones and slowing down as you level, and says it will lower them again once the launch rush is over. Combined with the layering below, that should keep quest mobs coming. A few habits help:

  • Group up for kill quests. Invite the players around you who are on the same quest - everyone in the group gets credit, and you stop fighting over every mob.
  • Keep moving. If one camp is crowded, do the next quest and come back. Our WoW Forever leveling guide for levels 1-30 lists every quest in order for both factions, with coordinates, so you always know what's next.
  • Use the quest database. Every quest is on our quest pages, with the giver, the objectives and the reward.
  • Keep the right rewards. Quest reward upgrades shows which quest rewards are an upgrade for your class and spec along the way.

Layering, queues and what to do if something goes wrong

WoW Forever has no realms, so Blizzard splits busy areas into layers - copies of the world. As MMOHuts reported on October 25, Blizzard said it would fix two beta problems before launch: players being separated from people they'd met after boat and zeppelin trips, and large groups being split when entering or leaving capital cities. When you join a group in a different layer, you'll be offered a move to your group's layer; according to AccountShark's launch guide, the October 15 beta notes made that move impossible to accept in combat.

Blizzard hasn't said how long queues will be. If you hit a queue or an error at 3:00 p.m.:

  • Wait, don't restart. Restarting the client over and over rarely helps on a launch night.
  • Read the error. Timesaver's server status log, updated November 3, collects player reports of a "No realms are currently available" error on the Normal ruleset for some North American accounts. If you see it, check Blizzard's own support channels before assuming your account is the problem.
  • Have a plan B. If the Normal ruleset is struggling, your group can agree on a backup ruleset - but only switch if everyone does, since rulesets don't share a world.

Minutes 35-50: trainers, professions and gear

Your first trip to town matters more than it looks:

  • Visit your class trainer every time you can learn a new rank. Training costs were evened out in the final build: learning every class ability from 1 to 60 costs between 206 and 207 gold for every class. Then put the new ranks on your bars yourself.
  • Pick your professions. Our profession bonuses and best profession for every class guide explains the new bonuses, and there's a guide for every class - for example the best professions for Warriors, Mages and Hunters. The professions and recipes page lists every recipe.
  • Find a campfire. Camping is new: every profession can build a Camp Feature, and anyone who sits or crafts nearby for a minute gets its buff. See how camping works.
  • Check your gear. The WoW Forever item database shows every item and where it comes from, and once you have a few pieces, Find Upgrades sims every item that could replace yours.

Minutes 50-60: plan your talents and your week

You won't spend a talent point in your first hour - the first one comes at level 10 - but this is the right time to plan. Open your class in the WoW Forever talent calculator: every class has a default build for each spec, on the trees from Blizzard's November 2 update. Each leveling guide walks through every point from 10 to 60:

The leveling guides were written for the October trees, so check each talent against the calculator - the November 2 build removed a few talents and added others (Shank for Rogues at level 24, for example). Then plan the rest of your launch:

Playing the WoW Forever launch with friends

Launch night is the best night to play with friends, and the easiest one to get separated on. Because there are no realms, the only things that decide whether you can play together are your ruleset and your faction - and, for a few minutes at a time, your layer:

  • Same ruleset, same faction. Characters on different rulesets never see each other, and on the PvP rulesets one account can't have characters on both sides. Agree on both before anyone makes a character.
  • Same starting zone, if you can. Two races that share a starting zone (Dwarf and Gnome, Orc and Troll) can quest together from level 1. Otherwise, meet up once you reach your faction's main town and its surrounding zones.
  • Invite early. Form the group as soon as you're all online, then accept the move to the group leader's layer when it's offered - out of combat.
  • Split the work. While one of you hands in quests, another can pick up the next ones, and a third can visit the trainer. In a group, kill credit for quest mobs is shared, so you don't need to tag every mob yourself.
  • Keep the talking somewhere else. Have your voice chat or Discord ready before 3:00 p.m.; Blizzard's own WoW Portal Room Discord is there for finding other players if you're on your own.

Launching at midnight or in the morning

One worldwide launch time means very different nights depending on where you live: mid-afternoon on the US West Coast, early evening on the East Coast, 11:00 p.m. in the UK, midnight in Central Europe and breakfast time in Asia and Australia. If your launch lands late at night or early in the morning, a little planning helps:

  • Do the setup earlier in the day. Install, update, decide your class and ruleset, and read your leveling guide while you're still fresh, so launch night is only playing.
  • Set a stopping point. Decide in advance - level 10 and your first talent point, say, or the end of your starting zone - and stop there. The starting zones are far less crowded the next day, and respawn rates stay high for a while.
  • Log out at an inn. Resting in an inn or a city builds Rested XP while you're offline, so your next session levels faster.
  • Don't rush into the PvP rulesets half-awake. If you're on a PvP ruleset, log out somewhere safe rather than in a contested area.

Common launch night mistakes

  • Forgetting your new spells. With spells no longer added to your bars automatically, it's easy to play for an hour without a spell you trained at level 4. Check your spellbook after every trainer visit.
  • Carrying an unequipped bag. The first bag you loot or buy does nothing until you drag it into a bag slot.
  • Picking a ruleset alone. You can't move a character to another ruleset later - make your character where your friends are.
  • Vendoring quest upgrades. Some early rewards are real upgrades for your spec; check quest reward upgrades before you sell them.
  • Spending your first talent point blind. The first points shape the whole build - open the talent calculator first.

Which class levels fastest in the first hours?

In our level 30 sims after the November 2 build, Beast Mastery Hunter is clearly the strongest leveling spec at 155 DPS, with Marksmanship Hunter (123) and Enhancement Shaman (122) next, then Elemental Shaman (90) and Arcane Mage (89). The full level 30 list is on the WoW Forever DPS rankings, and our level 30 rankings article explains why pets and ranged attacks are so strong early. Once you're past level 10, paste your character into the WoW Forever rotation simulator to see your own damage, spell by spell - the sim FAQ explains how it works.

Our take: the first hour of an MMO launch is about patience as much as speed. The players who level fastest tonight won't be the ones who fight over every boar - they'll be the ones who group up for kill quests, skip a crowded camp and come back later, and remember to put their new spells on their bars. Decide your ruleset, class and route before 3:00 p.m., and you'll spend the evening playing instead of reading menus.
