GuideWoW Forever Mage leveling guide: Frost Mage talent build from 10 to 60

This WoW Forever Mage leveling guide takes you from level 1 to 60 the fast way: as Frost, slowing, freezing and shattering everything you fight while you conjure your own food and water. It covers the full Mage leveling talent build - every one of the 51 points, level by level - the reasons behind each choice, your single-target and AoE rotations, the spells to train, the consumables worth carrying, where to quest, and the tips that make a Mage one of the most efficient classes to level in World of Warcraft: Forever.

Mages changed a lot from the original game. Frost now has Ice Lance and Fingers of Frost, Ice Barrier boosts your Frost damage as well as shielding you, every Mage learns Frost Blast and Frostfire Bolt from the trainer, and Arcane has Arcane Blast, Arcane Wrath and Missile Barrage. This guide uses the latest talent trees, from WoW Forever beta client build 1.60.1.70630.

WoW Forever Mage leveling guide: Frost Mage from level 1 to 60, with Ice Lance at 20, Shatter at 26, Fingers of Frost at 30, Ice Barrier at 40 and all 51 talent points at 60
WoW Forever Mage leveling: Frost from 10 to 60.

WoW Forever Mage leveling guide: the short version

  • Spec: Frost, with an Arcane side branch for Missile Barrage and Arcane Concentration. Final build: 10/0/41.
  • Key talents: Improved Frostbolt at 10, Ice Shards at 15, Ice Lance at 20, Shatter at 26, Fingers of Frost at 30 and Ice Barrier at 40.
  • How you kill: Frostbolt to pull and slow, Frost Nova when the mob arrives, then Ice Lance and Frostbolt on the frozen target - and Blizzard or Cone of Cold for groups.
  • How you survive: mobs rarely reach you. When they do, Frost Nova, Blink, Ice Barrier and Ice Block get you out.
  • Carry: your own conjured food and water, a Mana Agate, potions for emergencies and bandages.
  • Links: the full build on our talent calculator - Mage leveling build at 60 - and every Mage quest on our Mage quest page.

Mage strengths and weaknesses while leveling

Before the build, it helps to know what you're working with. A Mage is fragile but has more ways to keep mobs away than any other class - and it never needs to buy food or water.

Strengths

  • Free food and water. Conjure Water (level 4) and Conjure Food (6) mean you never pay a vendor for drinks.
  • Control. Frostbolt slows, Frost Nova roots, Cone of Cold slows a whole group, and Polymorph takes one mob out of the fight.
  • AoE. From level 20, Blizzard and Frost Nova let you pull a whole camp and kill it at once.
  • Escapes. Blink (20) and Ice Block (25, talent) get you out of almost anything.
  • Portals and teleports. From level 20 you can teleport to your capital city, saving a lot of travel time.

Weaknesses

  • Cloth and low health. Anything that reaches you and keeps hitting you is dangerous.
  • Mana. Big pulls drain you, and you'll drink after most AoE pulls.
  • Spell pushback. Taking damage slows your casts - until Ice Barrier at 40 stops it while the shield holds.
  • Immune mobs. Some mobs resist Frost, or can't be slowed or frozen, and fights against them take longer.

The Mage leveling talent build at 60

Here's the full Mage leveling talent build with every point spent. It's built for solo questing - killing fast, staying alive and keeping downtime low - and it doubles as a solid Frost Mage starting point at 60.

Open it in our talent calculator - the level 60 Mage leveling build - to read every tooltip. The calculator links in each bracket below show the build at that level.

WoW Forever gives you your first talent point at level 10 and one more every level after that - 51 points by 60. Each row of a tree needs 5 more points in that tree before it opens, so the bottom row of the Frost tree, Ice Barrier, needs 30 points in that tree. Talents that teach a new ability put it straight into your spellbook.

Every Mage leveling talent point from 10 to 60.

Levels 10 to 20: Improved Frostbolt, Ice Shards and Ice Lance

Points: 11, all Frost - level 20 build.

  • 10-14: Improved Frostbolt 5/5. "Reduces the casting time of your Frostbolt and Frost Blast spells by 0.5 sec." Frostbolt is your main spell for the rest of the game, and a faster cast means more damage and less time for the mob to reach you.
  • 15-19: Ice Shards 5/5. "Increases the critical strike damage bonus of your Frost spells by 100%." Frost crits now hit twice as hard as normal crits - and later Shatter makes your crits very common.
  • 20: Ice Lance. "Deals 28 to 32 Frost damage to an enemy target. Deals 200% increased damage to Frozen targets." An instant spell that hits three times as hard on a frozen target.

Frost Nova arrives at level 10, and at 20 you also learn Blizzard, Blink, Evocation and Mana Shield. Fire Blast (6) is your instant finisher until Ice Lance arrives.

Why not Elemental Precision first? It adds hit, which helps against mobs above your level, but Improved Frostbolt and Ice Shards add damage on every cast. Elemental Precision comes later in the build.

Level 10 to 20 tip: Frostbolt, Frostbolt, then Frost Nova when the mob reaches you. Step back and finish it with Frostbolt or Fire Blast. Drink to full between pulls - conjured water is free.

Levels 21 to 30: Shatter and Fingers of Frost

Points: 10, all Frost - level 30 build.

  • 21-23: Frost Channeling 3/3. "Reduces the mana cost of your Frost spells by 15% and reduces the threat caused by your Frost spells by 30%." Fifteen percent cheaper Frost spells means more pulls between drinks.
  • 24-25: Improved Frost Nova 2/2. "Reduces the cooldown of your Frost Nova spell by 4 sec." Frost Nova sets up Shatter, so you want it as often as possible.
  • 26-28: Shatter 3/3. "Increases the critical strike chance of all your spells against Frozen targets by 50%." Frost Nova a mob, and your spells get 50% more crit chance against it - and Ice Shards doubles those crits.
  • 29: Frostbite 1/3. "Gives your Chill effects a 5% chance to Freeze the target for 5 sec."
  • 30: Fingers of Frost 1/2. "Gives your Chill effects a 15% chance to grant you the Fingers of Frost effect, which treats your next 1 spell cast as if the target were Frozen. Lasts 15 sec."

Cone of Cold arrives at 26 and Frost Blast at 24: "Quickly launch a weak blast of frost at the enemy, causing 28 to 30 Frost damage and slowing movement speed by 40% for 9 sec." It's a quick, cheap way to keep a mob slowed. Conjure Mana Agate comes at 28 and Ice Armor at 30.

Why Shatter so early? Shatter is what makes Frost leveling fast: Frost Nova, then Ice Lance and Frostbolt crits on the frozen mob. Taking it at 26 changes how every fight plays.

Level 21 to 30 tip: The Shatter combo: Frostbolt the mob as it runs in, Frost Nova when it arrives, then Ice Lance or Frostbolt while it's frozen. Most mobs die before the freeze ends.

Levels 31 to 40: Cold Snap, Improved Blizzard and Ice Barrier

Points: 10, all Frost - level 40 build.

  • 31: Fingers of Frost 2/2. "Gives your Chill effects a 15% chance to grant you the Fingers of Frost effect, which treats your next 2 spells cast as if the target were Frozen. Lasts 15 sec." Every Frostbolt has a chance to set up two Shatter crits without Frost Nova.
  • 32: Cold Snap. "Finishes the remaining cooldown on all your other Frost spells." A second Frost Nova, Cone of Cold and Ice Block when a pull goes wrong.
  • 33-34: Frostbite 3/3. "Gives your Chill effects a 15% chance to Freeze the target for 5 sec." More free freezes - and every freeze is a Shatter window.
  • 35-37: Improved Blizzard 3/3. "Adds a Chill effect to your Blizzard spell. This effect lowers the target's movement speed by 40% for 1.5 sec." Blizzard now slows, so mobs in it barely move.
  • 38-39: Elemental Precision 2/3. "Improves your chance to hit with Frost and Fire spells by 4%."
  • 40: Ice Barrier. "Shield yourself, absorbing 447 damage and increasing your Frost damage by 3% for 1 min. While shielded, your Frost damage is increased by an additional 3% and you do not lose casting time when you take damage." A shield on a 30-second cooldown, more Frost damage and no spell pushback while it holds.

Ice Barrier needs Cold Snap and 30 points in Frost, so 40 is the earliest you can take it. Frostfire Bolt also arrives at 40: "Launches a bolt of frostfire at the enemy, causing 102 to 118 Frostfire damage, slowing movement speed by 40% and causing an additional 27 Frostfire damage over 9 sec. This spell will be checked against the lower of the target's Frost and Fire resists and counts as both Frost and Fire damage."

Why not Winter's Chill? In WoW Forever it only helps Cone of Cold, and it costs five points. Improved Blizzard does more for AoE leveling.

Level 31 to 40 tip: AoE pulls: gather a group, Frost Nova, step back, and channel Blizzard on them. Cone of Cold the ones that get out. Ice Barrier before you start means pushback won't interrupt your Blizzard.

Levels 41 to 50: Cone of Cold, Ice Block and Missile Barrage

Points: 10 - 4 Frost, 6 Arcane - level 50 build.

  • 41-43: Improved Cone of Cold 3/3. "Increases the damage dealt by your Cone of Cold spell by 35%."
  • 44: Ice Block. "You become encased in a block of ice, protecting you from all physical attacks and spells for 10 sec, but during that time you cannot attack, move, or cast spells." Your last-ditch escape.
  • 45-46: Missile Barrage 2/2 (Arcane). "Gives your Arcane Blast spell a 40% chance, and your Arcane Wrath, Fireball, Frostbolt, Frost Blast, and Frostfire Bolt spells a 20% chance to reduce the channeled duration of your next Arcane Missiles spell by 50%, reduce the Mana cost by 100%, and missiles fire every 0.5 sec." Frostbolt can now proc a free, fast Arcane Missiles.
  • 47-48: Wand Specialization 2/2. "Increases your damage with Wands by 25%." Free damage for finishing mobs without spending mana.
  • 49: Arcane Focus 1/5. "Improves your chance to hit with Arcane spells by 1%." The fifth Arcane point, which opens the second row.
  • 50: Arcane Concentration 1/5. "Gives you a 2% chance of entering a Clearcasting state after any damage spell hits a target. The Clearcasting state reduces the mana cost of your next damage spell by 100%."

Why Arcane now? The rest of the Frost tree is mostly range and defence. Missile Barrage adds damage to the Frostbolt you're already casting, and Arcane Concentration saves mana on every spell.

Level 41 to 50 tip: When Missile Barrage procs, cast Arcane Missiles straight away - it's free and fast, and it's extra damage on top of your Frostbolts.

Levels 51 to 60: Arcane Concentration and the finishing touches

Points: 10 - 4 Arcane, 6 Frost - level 60 build.

  • 51-54: Arcane Concentration 5/5. "Gives you a 10% chance of entering a Clearcasting state after any damage spell hits a target. The Clearcasting state reduces the mana cost of your next damage spell by 100%." A free spell one time in ten.
  • 55-57: Permafrost 3/3. "Increases the duration of your Chill effects by 33% and reduces the target's speed by an additional 10%." Longer, stronger slows on everything.
  • 58-59: Arctic Reach 2/2. "Increases the range of your Frostbolt, Frost Blast, and Blizzard spells and the radius of your Frost Nova and Cone of Cold spells by 20%." Pull from further away, and a bigger Frost Nova and Cone of Cold.
  • 60: Elemental Precision 3/3. "Improves your chance to hit with Frost and Fire spells by 6%."

At 60 you have 10/0/41: a full Frost leveling build with Shatter, Fingers of Frost and Ice Barrier, and free spells from Arcane. Try it on our rotation simulator.

Mage leveling rotation

A Frost Mage has two rotations: one for single mobs and one for groups.

  • Levels 1-9: Fireball to pull, Frostbolt (4) once you have it, Fire Blast (6) to finish. Wand if you're low on mana.
  • Levels 10-25 (single target): Frostbolt, Frostbolt, Frost Nova when it arrives, step back, Frostbolt or Ice Lance to finish.
  • Levels 26-60 (single target): Frostbolt as it runs in, Frost Nova, then Ice Lance and Frostbolt while it's frozen. Use Fingers of Frost procs on Ice Lance, and Missile Barrage procs on Arcane Missiles.
  • AoE (20+): gather the mobs, Frost Nova, step back, Blizzard. Cone of Cold (26) anything that breaks out.
  • When things go wrong: Frost Nova and Blink away, Polymorph (8) one mob, Ice Barrier, Cold Snap for a second Frost Nova, and Ice Block as a last resort.

Between pulls, eat and drink your conjured food and water together. Evocation restores a lot of mana in a few seconds when your water runs out.

For which race is best, see our best race for Mages in WoW Forever guide.

Gear: what stats a leveling Mage wants

  • Spell damage (Frost or all spells): more damage on every Frostbolt and Ice Lance.
  • Intellect: a bigger mana pool and more spell crit.
  • Stamina: you're in cloth - a little extra health saves a lot of deaths.
  • Spirit: faster mana regeneration between casts.
  • Wand DPS: free damage to finish mobs, boosted by Wand Specialization at 47.

World-drop and dungeon wands are often better for their level, so check every drop - our items page lists every wand in the game with its stats and where it comes from.

Our Quest Upgrades tool finds quest rewards that are upgrades for your Mage as you level - paste your armory link or addon export. For pre-raid gear at 40, 50 and 60, see our Frost Mage BiS list, and for the full spec see our Frost Mage class guide.

Where to quest: a Mage leveling route

Mages level well in any zone, and zones with packs of humanoids or beasts are ideal for Frost AoE. Our quest pages list every quest in each zone with its level, objectives and rewards:

Don't forget your class quests: every Mage quest is on one page, with its level, objectives and rewards.

Consumables for Mage leveling

You conjure your own food and water, so a Mage needs very little from vendors. These are worth carrying:

Our best professions for Mages guide explains which professions suit a leveling Mage best.

Mage leveling tips and tricks

  • Always have water. Conjure it before you leave town and whenever you're low.
  • Pull at range. Two Frostbolts before a melee mob reaches you is the core of Mage leveling.
  • Frost Nova, then step back. Get out of melee range so you can keep casting while the mob is frozen.
  • Use Ice Lance on frozen targets. Against an unfrozen mob it's weak; frozen, it's three times as strong.
  • Teleport to train. From 20, teleport to your capital city when you need to train, then hearth or fly back.
  • Polymorph the extra mob. Only one at a time, so pick the one that's most dangerous.
  • Group up for dungeons. Mages bring strong AoE and free food and water for the group.

Should you level as Fire or Arcane instead?

You can. Fire hits harder with Pyroblast, Blast Wave and Combustion, but has less control and runs out of mana faster. Arcane has Arcane Blast and Arcane Wrath and big burst with Arcane Power, but is the most mana-hungry. Frost's slows and freezes keep you safe and its AoE kills groups quickly, which makes it the most reliable way to level a Mage. See our Fire and Arcane class guides for those specs at 60.

WoW Forever Mage leveling guide: FAQ

  • What's the best Mage leveling spec in WoW Forever? Frost, with Shatter, Fingers of Frost and Ice Barrier, plus Missile Barrage and Arcane Concentration from Arcane.
  • When do Mages get Blizzard? At level 20.
  • When do Mages get Ice Barrier? It's a level 40 talent at the bottom of the Frost tree - take it at 40 with this build.
  • When do I get my first talent point? At level 10, then one every level - 51 at 60.
  • Should I AoE farm while leveling? From about 30 with Improved Blizzard, yes - but only if you can drink after each pull.
  • Can I see this build in a talent calculator? Yes - open the Mage leveling build.
Our take: Frost Mage leveling in WoW Forever is smoother than ever. Ice Lance and Fingers of Frost turn every Frost Nova into big crits, and Ice Barrier at 40 removes the pushback that made Mage AoE risky. Mages are still fragile, but with free food and water and this much control, you'll spend very little time dead or drinking.
