This WoW Forever Rogue leveling guide takes you from level 1 to 60 the fast way: as Combat, dual-wielding and Sinister Striking through every quest mob, with Blade Flurry for pairs and Adrenaline Rush for the hard fights. It covers the full Rogue leveling talent build - every one of the 51 points, level by level - the reasons behind each choice, your combo point rotation, the abilities to train, poisons and consumables, where to quest, and the tips that make a Rogue one of the fastest killers while leveling in World of Warcraft: Forever.
Rogues changed a lot from the original game. Hack and Slash replaces the old Sword, Dagger, Fist and Mace Specialization talents with one talent that works with any weapon, Puncturing Wounds replaces Improved Backstab, and there are new talents such as Flawless Execution, Mutilate, Venom and Thousand Cuts. Poisons are now recipes in their own spellbook tab. This guide uses the latest talent trees, from WoW Forever beta client build 1.60.1.70630.

Rogue strengths and weaknesses while leveling
Before the build, it helps to know what you're working with. A Rogue kills single mobs very quickly and can skip most of the fights other classes have to take - but it can't heal itself.
Strengths
- Fast kills. Energy refills on its own, so a Rogue never runs out of mana and never needs to drink.
- Stealth. You can walk past most mobs to a quest objective, and pick your fights. Sap (10) takes a humanoid out of a pull before it starts.
- Escapes. Sprint (10), Evasion (8) and Vanish (22) - and Endurance makes Sprint and Evasion available far more often.
- Interrupts and stuns. Kick (12), Gouge (6), Cheap Shot (26) and Kidney Shot (30) shut casters down.
- Lockpicking and pickpocketing. Extra money and the odd lockbox while you level.
Weaknesses
- No self-healing. Between pulls you eat food and use bandages, and a long fight against two mobs can go badly.
- Leather armor. You take more damage than a Warrior or Paladin, so Evasion and stuns matter.
- Poisons cost reagents. From level 20 you'll make your own poisons from reagents, which takes a little time and money.
- Weak against groups. Before Blade Flurry at 30, pulling three mobs at once is usually a mistake.

WoW Forever gives you your first talent point at level 10 and one more every level after that - 51 points by 60. Each row of a tree needs 5 more points in that tree before it opens, so the bottom row of the Combat tree, Adrenaline Rush, needs 30 points in that tree. Talents that teach a new ability put it straight into your spellbook.
Levels 10 to 20: Improved Sinister Strike, Precision and Deflection
Points: 11, all Combat - level 20 build.
- 10-11: Improved Sinister Strike 2/2. "Reduces the Energy cost of your Sinister Strike ability by 5." Sinister Strike is the button you'll press most from 1 to 60, and a cheaper one means more of them per fight.
- 12-14: Improved Eviscerate 3/3. "Increases the damage done by your Eviscerate ability by 20%." Your finisher hits a fifth harder.
- 15-17: Precision 3/3. "Improves your chance to hit by 3%." Dual-wielding misses a lot, and a miss is wasted Energy.
- 18-20: Deflection 3/3. "Increases your Parry chance by 6%." Less damage taken in every melee fight.
Slice and Dice and Sprint arrive at level 10, Kick at 12, and Garrote and Expose Armor at 14. At 20 you learn Rupture and your first poisons. Backstab (4) and Ambush (18) need a dagger in your main hand, so a Combat Rogue mostly uses Sinister Strike.
Why not Malice first? Five points of crit is strong, but it's in Assassination, and putting points there now delays Blade Flurry, Hack and Slash and Adrenaline Rush. Malice comes at 43.
Levels 21 to 30: Endurance, Dual Wield Specialization and Blade Flurry
Points: 10, all Combat - level 30 build.
- 21-22: Endurance 2/2. "Reduces the cooldown of your Sprint and Evasion abilities by 60%." Sprint and Evasion are your two big escapes, and now you get them more than twice as often.
- 23-24: Lightning Reflexes 2/5. "Increases your Dodge chance by 2%."
- 25-29: Dual Wield Specialization 5/5. "Increases the damage done by your off-hand weapon by 25%." A quarter more damage from your off-hand on every swing.
- 30: Blade Flurry. "Increases your melee attack speed by 20% and your melee attacks strike an additional nearby opponent. Lasts 15 sec." Twenty percent faster attacks, and two mobs at once take full damage.
Distract and Vanish arrive at 22, Cheap Shot at 26, and Kidney Shot and Deadly Poison at 30.
Why not Riposte? It needs Deflection 3/3, which you have, and it's a good disarm against humanoids - but it only works after a parry and costs a point that Dual Wield Specialization uses better while leveling. If you like it, swap it in for one point of Lightning Reflexes.
Levels 31 to 40: Hack and Slash, Aggression and Adrenaline Rush
Points: 10, all Combat - level 40 build.
- 31-35: Hack and Slash 5/5. "Gives your melee weapon attacks a benefit depending on the weapon. Axe/Sword: Your successful melee attacks have a 5% chance to trigger an extra attack on the target. Dagger/Fist: Increases your critical strike chance by 5%. Mace: Your attacks ignore 15% of your target's armor." It works with any weapon type: swords and axes give extra attacks, daggers and fist weapons give crit, and maces ignore armor.
- 36-38: Aggression 3/3. "Increases the damage of your Sinister Strike, Backstab, and Eviscerate abilities by 6%."
- 39: Flawless Execution. "Reduces the Energy cost of your Eviscerate ability by 10." A cheaper Eviscerate means you can finish a mob and start the next one sooner.
- 40: Adrenaline Rush. "Increases your Energy regeneration rate by 100% for 15 sec." Double Energy for 15 seconds - use it on elites and big pulls.
Adrenaline Rush needs 30 points in Combat, so 40 is the earliest you can take it. Blind arrives at 34, and Safe Fall at 40.
Levels 41 to 50: Weapon Expertise, Malice and Remorseless Attacks
Points: 10 - 2 Combat, 8 Assassination - level 50 build.
- 41-42: Weapon Expertise 2/2. "Reduces the chance for your attacks to be Dodged or Parried by 2%."
- 43-47: Malice 5/5 (Assassination). "Increases your critical strike chance with all attacks and Poisons by 5%."
- 48-49: Remorseless Attacks 2/2. "After killing a non-trivial enemy, gives you a 40% increased critical strike chance on your next Sinister Strike, Backstab, Ambush, Mutilate, or Ghostly Strike. Lasts 20 sec." Your first Sinister Strike on the next mob is likely to crit.
- 50: Ruthlessness 1/3. "Gives your finishing moves a 20% chance to add a Combo Point to your target."
Why switch to Assassination now? The rest of the Combat tree is utility - Improved Kick, Improved Sprint and Riposte - and Assassination's first rows add crit, combo points and Energy.
Levels 51 to 60: Ruthlessness, Relentless Strikes and Lethality
Points: 10, all Assassination - level 60 build.
- 51-52: Ruthlessness 3/3. "Gives your finishing moves a 60% chance to add a Combo Point to your target." After Slice and Dice you often start building toward Eviscerate with a combo point already in hand.
- 53: Relentless Strikes. "Your finishing moves have a 20% chance per Combo Point to restore 25 Energy." A five-point finisher always restores 25 Energy - with Flawless Execution, that's a free Eviscerate.
- 54-58: Lethality 5/5. "Increases the critical strike damage bonus of your Sinister Strike, Gouge, Backstab, Mutilate, Ghostly Strike, and Hemorrhage abilities by 20%."
- 59-60: Murder 2/2. "Increases all damage dealt by 4% against Humanoid and Giant targets." Many quest mobs are humanoids, so this is a lot of extra damage.
At 60 you have 18/33/0: a full Combat leveling build with Blade Flurry, Hack and Slash and Adrenaline Rush, plus crit and combo points from Assassination. Try it on our rotation simulator.
Rogue leveling rotation
A Combat Rogue's rotation is about spending Energy well and using combo points on the right finisher:
- Levels 1-9: Sinister Strike to three or four combo points, Eviscerate. Gouge when you need to bandage or move.
- Levels 10-25: Sinister Strike, Slice and Dice (10) at one or two combo points, Sinister Strike to five, Eviscerate. Kick (12) every caster.
- Levels 26-60: open from Stealth with Cheap Shot (26) or Garrote, Slice and Dice, Sinister Strike to five, then Eviscerate - or Rupture on a mob with a lot of health. Blade Flurry and Adrenaline Rush on big pulls.
- When things go wrong: Kidney Shot (30), Evasion, Gouge to bandage, Sprint away, or Vanish.
Between pulls, eat to full and use bandages when you're in a hurry. Keep your poisons topped up on both weapons.
Rogue pulling: openers, Sap and extra mobs
How you start a fight decides how it ends. A Rogue chooses its fights more than any other class, so it pays to plan each pull instead of running in:
- Cheap Shot opener. "Stuns the target for 4 sec. Must be stealthed. Awards 2 combo points." Four seconds of free hits and two combo points before the mob can act - the best opener for a single dangerous mob.
- Garrote opener. "Garrote the enemy, causing 144 damage over 18 sec, increased by your Attack Power. Must be stealthed and behind the target. Awards 1 combo point." A strong opener on a mob with a lot of health, as long as you can get behind it.
- Sap the extra humanoid. "Incapacitates the target for up to 25 sec. Only works on Humanoids that are not in combat. Any damage taken will break the effect. Only 1 target may be sapped at a time. Does not break Stealth." Sap the second mob, then open on the first. Kill it before the Sap ends, and you've turned a two-mob pull into two one-mob pulls.
- Pull with Throw or a ranged weapon. If a mob is standing in a group, hit it from range and fight it away from its friends.
- Distract to get behind. "Throws a distraction, attracting the attention of all nearby enemies and reducing their Stealth detection as if they were 1 level lower for 10 seconds. Does not break stealth."
- Blind as a last resort. "Blinds the target, causing it to wander disoriented for up to 10 sec. Any damage caused will remove the effect." It costs a Blinding Powder and has a long cooldown, so save it for the pull that's going badly.
If two mobs reach you before level 30, Gouge one, kill the other, then finish the first. After 30, Blade Flurry makes two mobs much less dangerous - but three or more is still a reason to Sprint or Vanish rather than fight. Ruthlessness and Relentless Strikes at 50 and beyond mean chaining pulls costs less Energy, so you can move from one mob to the next without waiting.

Gear: what stats a leveling Rogue wants
- Weapon damage: a slow, hard-hitting main hand weapon makes Sinister Strike and Eviscerate stronger.
- Agility: Attack Power, crit and dodge - your most important stat.
- Hit: dual-wielding misses a lot, so Precision and hit on gear help every swing.
- Strength: more Attack Power.
- Stamina: you can't heal, so more health means fewer bandages.

Poisons and consumables for Rogue leveling
A Rogue uses more consumables than most classes - but they're cheap, and they speed up every fight:
- Poisons: make them from the Poisons tab of your spellbook from level 20 - Instant Poison (20), Crippling Poison (20), Instant Poison II (28), Deadly Poison (30) and Instant Poison III (36). Instant Poison on both weapons is the simplest choice for leveling.
- Sharpening stones (Blacksmithing): Rough (1), Coarse (5), Heavy (15), Solid (25) and Dense (35), for swords, axes and daggers.
- Weightstones: Rough (1), Coarse (5), Heavy (15), Solid (25) and Dense (35), for maces.
- Agility elixirs: Elixir of Minor Agility (2), Elixir of Agility (27), Elixir of Greater Agility (38) and Elixir of the Mongoose (46).
- Healing Potions (Alchemy): Minor (1), Lesser (3), Healing Potion (12), Greater (21), Superior (35) and Major (45).
- Bandages (First Aid): Linen Bandage, Wool Bandage, Silk Bandage, Mageweave Bandage and Runecloth Bandage, plus the heavy versions of each. In WoW Forever, First Aid makes these - every Rogue should learn it.

Rogue leveling tips and tricks
- Skip fights you don't need. Stealth past mobs on the way to your quest objective.
- Kick every caster. A Kick stops the cast and locks that school for a few seconds.
- Gouge to bandage. Gouge the mob, step back and bandage - just don't hit it before you're ready.
- Slice and Dice first on long fights. On a mob that's about to die, finish with Eviscerate instead.
- Use Evasion early. It's on a much shorter cooldown with Endurance, so use it whenever two mobs are hitting you.
- Pick Pocket humanoids. It's free money while you level.
- Group up for dungeons. Rogues bring high single-target damage, and Kick and Sap help on every pull.
Should you level as Assassination or Subtlety instead?
You can. Assassination has Mutilate, Venom and Seal Fate and is very strong with daggers and poisons, and Subtlety has Hemorrhage, Premeditation and Preparation and the best stealth tools. Both work, but Combat's Blade Flurry and Adrenaline Rush handle the two-mob pulls that leveling keeps throwing at you. See our Assassination and Subtlety class guides for those specs at 60.
