This WoW Forever Priest leveling guide takes you from level 1 to 60 the fast way: as Shadow, with a wand in hand and Spirit Tap keeping your mana topped up. It covers the full Priest leveling talent build - every one of the 51 points, level by level - the reasons behind each choice, the spells you'll use, the consumables worth carrying, where to quest, and the tips that make a Priest one of the most self-sufficient classes to level in World of Warcraft: Forever.
Priests changed more than you might think from the original game. Every Priest now gets Devouring Plague, Improved Mind Flay makes each tick of Mind Flay hit harder than the last, Shadow Word: Death is a new finisher, Shadow Weaving only boosts your own Shadow damage on the target, and Power Word: Shield now stops spell pushback while it holds. Blizzard has also reshuffled the Priest talent trees during the beta, so this guide uses the latest trees, from beta client build 1.60.1.70630.

Priest strengths and weaknesses while leveling
Before the build, it helps to know what you're working with. Priests level differently from most classes: slower to kill at first, but with almost no downtime once Spirit Tap and the wand come online.
Strengths
- Self-healing. Power Word: Shield, Renew, Lesser Heal, Heal and Flash Heal mean you rarely die to a single bad pull - and you never need to sit and eat as long as your mana holds.
- Low downtime. Spirit Tap doubles your Spirit after a kill and lets half your mana regeneration continue while casting. Chain pulls and it barely runs out.
- Wands. Shoot costs no mana. With Wand Specialization (+25% wand damage) you finish every mob for free.
- Group demand. Every dungeon group wants a healer. A Priest can heal dungeons in leveling gear, which makes finding a group easy - and Vampiric Embrace heals your party even as Shadow.
- Shadowform at 42. 10% more Shadow damage, half-price Shadow spells, double critical damage on Shadow spells and 15% less physical damage taken.
Weaknesses
- Cloth armor. You're the softest target in the game. Inner Fire helps, Power Word: Shield helps more, but melee mobs hurt.
- Mana-limited. Every spell costs mana. Before Spirit Tap and Shadowform, long fights or multiple mobs drain you quickly.
- No speed boost. Priests have no travel form, sprint or mount spell - you walk until your first mount.
- Slow early kills. Smite and early Mind Blast are weak; levels 1 to 20 are the slowest part of Priest leveling.
- Shadowform trade-off. You can't cast healing spells in Shadowform, so you have to drop it to heal - and recasting it costs 40% of your base mana.

Here's the full Priest leveling talent build with every point spent. It's built for solo questing - killing fast, staying alive and keeping your mana up - and it doubles as a solid Shadow raid starting point at 60.

1/1ShadowformOpen it in our talent calculator - the level 60 Priest leveling build - to read every tooltip. The calculator links in each bracket below show the build at that level.
WoW Forever gives you your first talent point at level 10 and one more every level after that - 51 points by 60. Each row of a tree needs 5 more points in that tree before it opens, so the Shadow tree's bottom row, Shadowform, needs 30 points in Shadow.
Levels 10 to 20: Spirit Tap and Mind Flay
Points: 11, all Shadow - level 20 build.
- 10-14: Spirit Tap 5/5. "Gives you a 100% chance to increase your Spirit by 100% for 15 sec after killing a non-trivial target or when an enemy afflicted by your Vampiric Embrace dies. For the duration, 50% of your Mana regeneration will continue while casting." This is the most important leveling talent a Priest has. After almost every kill your Spirit doubles, and half your mana regeneration keeps going while you cast - so you can pull the next mob straight away.
- 15-16: Improved Shadow Word: Pain 2/2. Increases the duration of your Shadow Word: Pain spell by 6 sec. Shadow Word: Pain is your opener on every mob, and a longer one means more damage for the same mana.
- 17-19: Improved Mind Blast 3/5. Reduces the cooldown of your Mind Blast spell by 1.5 sec. Improved Mind Blast now sits in the second row of the Shadow tree, so you can take it before Mind Flay. Mind Blast is your biggest hit at this level, and a shorter cooldown means more of them per mob.
- 20: Mind Flay. "Assault the target's mind with Shadow energy, causing 63 Shadow damage over 3 sec and slowing their movement speed by 50%." Mind Flay is a channel that damages and slows, and it becomes your main damage spell for the rest of the game.
Why not Wand Specialization first? It's only two points for 25% more wand damage, and many players take it at 10. But Mind Flay needs 10 points in Shadow, and putting two points in Discipline first pushes Mind Flay to level 22. We'd rather have it at 20, then take Wand Specialization straight after.
Levels 21 to 30: wand power, Mind Flay and Shadow Weaving
Points: 10 - 2 Discipline, 8 Shadow - level 30 build.
- 21-22: Wand Specialization 2/2 (Discipline). Increases your damage with Wands by 25%. Two points for a quarter more damage on the free part of your rotation.
- 23-24: Improved Mind Flay 2/2. "Each instance of damage of Mind Flay deals 20% more damage than its previous instance of damage." The ticks ramp up, so the last tick of a channel hits hardest - let Mind Flay finish rather than clipping it early.
- 25-26: Improved Mind Blast 5/5. "Reduces the cooldown of your Mind Blast spell by 2.5 sec." Mind Blast's 8-second cooldown is now 5.5 seconds - about one more Mind Blast on every mob that lasts 20 seconds.
- 27: Vampiric Embrace. "Afflicts your target with Shadow energy that causes all party members to be healed for 20% of any Shadow spell damage you deal for 30 sec." It heals you as you deal Shadow damage, and in WoW Forever Spirit Tap can also trigger when an enemy with your Vampiric Embrace dies. Its cooldown is now 30 seconds, so you can put it on almost every pull. It also opens the Shadowform path.
- 28-30: Shadow Weaving 3/3. "Your Shadow damage spells have a 100% chance to increase the Shadow damage the target takes from you by 2% for 15 sec, stacking up to 5 times." Five stacks means 10% more Shadow damage from you on that target. It only counts your own damage, and with a 100% chance it reaches five stacks after five Shadow spells on any mob you fight.
This is also when Priests get Devouring Plague (level 20) - a damage-over-time disease that heals you, which every Priest now learns from the trainer. Its cooldown is 24 seconds in the latest data. Shadow Word: Death arrives at 32, with an 18-second cooldown.
Levels 31 to 40: Devouring Contagion and Darkness
Points: 10, all Shadow - level 40 build.
- 31: Shadow Focus 1/5. Improves your chance to hit with Shadow spells by 1%. The 20th Shadow point, which opens the fifth row.
- 32-33: Devouring Contagion 2/2. "Reduces the mana cost of your Devouring Plague by 50%. Targets that die while Devouring Plague is active spreads it, jumping to 2 nearby enemies within 10 yds for the remaining duration." Half-price Devouring Plague, and when mobs come in pairs or threes, the disease jumps on to the rest.
- 34-36: Shadow Focus 4/5. Improves your chance to hit with Shadow spells by 4%. Mobs a level or two above you resist more often, and a resisted Mind Blast is wasted mana. The level 36 point is the 25th in Shadow, which opens the sixth row.
- 37-40: Darkness 4/5. Increases your Shadow damage done by 10%. Two percent per point on every Shadow spell.
Why not Silence or Shadow Reach here? Silence is useful against caster mobs and in PvP, and Shadow Reach adds range, but neither adds damage on every pull. Darkness does. If you level on a PvP Ruleset, Silence is worth swapping in for Early Demise later.
What about Dark Inspiration? It's new in the fourth row of the Shadow tree: "Your Mind Blast and fully channeled Mind Flay causes Dark Inspiration, increasing yours and your party's Spirit by 15% for 10 sec." Spirit is mana regeneration, so it's a real mana talent, and it helps your whole party. But it costs five points, and solo you already have Spirit Tap. If you level mostly in dungeons, take it in place of Early Demise and three points of Shadow Focus.
Levels 41 to 50: Shadowform
Points: 10 - 2 Shadow, 8 Discipline - level 50 build.
- 41: Darkness 5/5. The 30th Shadow point.
- 42: Shadowform. "Assume Shadowform, increasing your Shadow damage by 10%, reducing the Mana cost of all Shadow spells by 50%, increasing the critical strike damage bonus of your Shadow spells by 100%, and reducing Physical damage taken by you by 15%. However, you may not cast healing spells while in this form." The single biggest power spike of Priest leveling: Shadow spells cost half as much, hit harder and crit for much more, and you take 15% less physical damage.
- 43-45: Twin Disciplines 3/5 (Discipline). Increases the damage and healing of your instant cast spells by 5%. Shadow Word: Pain, Devouring Plague, Vampiric Embrace and Shadow Word: Death are all instant - and so are Power Word: Shield and Renew.
- 46-48: Mental Strength 3/5 (Discipline). Increases your total Intellect by 6%. A bigger mana pool means longer chains of pulls. In the latest build, Improved Power Word: Shield moved down to the third row of Discipline, so you need 10 Discipline points before you can take it - and Mental Strength, now in the second row, is the most useful way to get there.
- 49-50: Twin Disciplines 5/5. The tenth Discipline point, which opens the third row: Meditation, Improved Power Word: Shield and Inner Focus.
Shadowform comes at 42, not 40, because of the two points in Wand Specialization at 21 and 22. If you'd rather have Shadowform at 40, skip Wand Specialization and take it at 41 and 42 instead - it's a fair trade, and both versions end up with the same build at 60.
Levels 51 to 60: Meditation and the finishing touches
Points: 10 - 7 Discipline, 3 Shadow - level 60 build.
- 51-53: Meditation 3/3 (Discipline). "Allows 50% of your Mana regeneration to continue while casting." Spirit Tap only gives this after a kill; Meditation gives it all the time.
- 54-56: Improved Power Word: Shield 3/3 (Discipline). Increases the damage absorbed by your Power Word: Shield by 20%. A bigger shield means fewer heals, and fewer heals means staying in Shadowform.
- 57-58: Early Demise 2/2. Increases Shadow Word: Death's critical strike chance on targets at or below 20% health by 30%. Combined with Shadow Word: Death, it turns the end of every fight into a likely critical finisher.
- 59: Shadow Focus 5/5. Full Shadow hit from talents.
- 60: Inner Focus. "When activated, reduces the Mana cost of your next spell by 100% and increases its critical effect chance by 25% if it is a non-periodic spell and capable of a critical effect." A free spell every three minutes - use it on Mind Blast or on an emergency heal.
At 60 you have a complete Shadow build: 34 points in Shadow with Shadowform, Shadow Weaving and Darkness, plus Discipline's mana talents. Want to save mana rather than absorb more damage? Swap Improved Power Word: Shield for Mental Agility: "Reduces the mana cost of your Smite, Holy Fire, and instant cast spells by 10%." Then try your level 60 Priest on our rotation simulator.
Priest spells to train while leveling
Visit your trainer every even level - Priests learn new ranks constantly. The spells that matter most for leveling, from the WoW Forever spellbook:
- Level 1-10: Smite and Lesser Heal (1), Shadow Word: Pain (4), Power Word: Shield (6), Renew and Fade (8), Mind Blast (10).
- Level 12-20: Inner Fire (12), Psychic Scream (14), Heal (16), Dispel Magic (18), and at 20 Flash Heal, Holy Fire, Devouring Plague, Fear Ward and Mind Flay (talent).
- Level 24-40: Mana Burn (24), Vampiric Embrace (talent, 25+), Shadow Protection and Mind Control (30), Shadow Word: Death (32), Greater Heal and Shadowform (40).
- Every few levels: new ranks of Shadow Word: Pain, Mind Blast, Mind Flay and Power Word: Shield - always train them.
Each Priest race also has two racial Priest spells of its own:
- Human: Divine Grace (a strong instant heal on an ally below 50% health) and Feedback.
- Dwarf: Desperate Prayer (an instant self-heal) and Chastise.
- Night Elf: Starshards (a channelled Arcane nuke) and Elune's Grace.
- Gnome: Contingency Plan and Confounding Flash.
- Undead: Dark Sacrifice (health into mana) and Touch of Weakness.
- Troll: Hex of Weakness and Shadowguard.
For which race is best, see our best race for Priests in WoW Forever guide.
Wands: your free damage
A wand does damage without costing mana, so it's the most important weapon slot for a leveling Priest. Upgrade it whenever you can. Enchanters make a wand for almost every bracket:
- Lesser Magic Wand (level 5) and Greater Magic Wand (13)
- Lesser Mystic Wand (26) and Greater Mystic Wand (30)
- Twisted Nether Wand (37) and Dreambough Wand (43) - new in WoW Forever
- Lesser Eternal Wand (49), Greater Eternal Wand (55) and the BoP Brilliant Wand (55, Enchanters only)
World-drop and dungeon wands are often better for their level, so check every drop - our items page lists every wand in the game with its stats and where it comes from.
Gear: what stats a leveling Priest wants
- Spirit: more mana regeneration - and Spirit Tap doubles it after every kill.
- Intellect: a bigger mana pool and more spell crit.
- Spell damage (Shadow or all spells): more damage on every Shadow spell.
- Stamina: you're in cloth, and Shadow Word: Death's backlash scales with your health.
- Wand DPS: the most important number on your ranged slot.

Consumables for Priest leveling
A Priest doesn't need much, but these make leveling faster and safer:
- Water: buy it from innkeepers and food vendors - Refreshing Spring Water (1), Ice Cold Milk (5), Melon Juice (15), Sweet Nectar (25), Moonberry Juice (35) and Morning Glory Dew (45). Priests can't conjure their own.
- Mana Potions (Alchemy): Minor (5), Lesser (14), Mana Potion (22), Greater (31), Superior (41) and Major (49).
- Healing Potions (now First Aid): Lesser Healing Potion (3), Healing Potion (12), Greater (21), Superior (35) and Major (45). In WoW Forever, First Aid makes these, so any Priest can craft their own.
- Bandages (First Aid): from Linen Bandage to Runecloth Bandage - a free heal that costs no mana.
- Elixirs: Elixir of Wisdom (10) and Elixir of Greater Intellect (37) for mana, Elixir of Shadow Power (40) for Shadow damage, and Mageblood Elixir (40) for mana regeneration.
- Weapon oils: Minor Wizard Oil (5), Lesser Wizard Oil (30), Wizard Oil (40) and Brilliant Wizard Oil (45) add spell damage when applied to your melee weapon.
Our best professions for Priests guide explains why Tailoring and Enchanting are the classic leveling pair - Enchanting also makes the wands above.
Priest leveling tips and tricks
- Shield first, pull second. In WoW Forever, Power Word: Shield stops damage interrupting your spells while it holds. Shield, then start casting - no more pushback on Mind Blast.
- Watch Weakened Soul. A shielded target can't be shielded again for 15 seconds, even though the spell's own cooldown is only 4.
- Let Spirit Tap work. Kill the next mob within 15 seconds of the last one and you keep the bonus rolling.
- Let Mind Flay finish. With Improved Mind Flay, every tick hits harder than the one before, and the 50% slow keeps melee mobs from reaching you while you channel.
- Stand still to wand. Since build 70425, Shoot makes you stand still for half a second before it fires, so stop moving before you start wanding.
- Psychic Scream is your panic button. It sends nearby enemies within 8 yards fleeing for 8 seconds. Use it, then heal or run.
- Fade on pulls with friends. In a group, Fade drops your threat for 10 seconds - and you can use it every 30.
- Use Devouring Plague as a heal. Its damage heals you, so put it on tough mobs when you're low.
- Don't Shadow Word: Death a mob that won't die. The 10% health backlash adds up; save it for the last 20%.
- Group up for dungeons. Healers are always in demand. If you heal a run, swap to a healing-friendly gear set - you'll level fast and collect good loot.
Should you level as Holy or Discipline instead?
You can, and it's slower. Holy and Discipline are healing specs - stronger in dungeons, much weaker at killing quest mobs alone. Discipline's Penance (row 5, level 30) does add solid Holy damage, and a Smite-and-Holy-Fire Discipline build can quest. But Shadow's Spirit Tap, Mind Flay and Shadowform make it the fastest way to level a Priest by a wide margin. If you mostly level through dungeons, see our Holy and Discipline class guides, and the best healer in WoW Forever.
