This WoW Forever Hunter leveling guide takes you from level 1 to 60 the fast way: as Beast Mastery, with a pet that tanks every mob while you shoot it down from range. It covers the full Hunter leveling talent build - every one of the 51 points, level by level - the reasons behind each choice, your shot rotation at every stage, the spells to train, ammo and consumables, where to quest, and the tips that make a Hunter the classic easy class to level in World of Warcraft: Forever.
Hunters changed a lot from the original game. Aimed Shot is now a trainer spell rather than a talent, Beast Mastery can summon hawks to dive-bomb your target, Marksmanship has Lone Wolf for Hunters who'd rather fight alone, and Monster Slaying and Humanoid Slaying have been replaced by Improved Tracking. This guide uses the latest talent trees, from WoW Forever beta client build 1.60.1.70630.

Hunter strengths and weaknesses while leveling
Before the build, it helps to know what you're working with. A Hunter is really two characters - you and your pet - and almost every talent in this build makes one of them stronger.
Strengths
- A pet tank. From level 10 your pet takes the hits, so you can fight mobs a level or two above you and rarely take damage.
- Ranged damage. Most mobs die before they reach you, and the ones that don't are already fighting your pet.
- Low downtime. Auto Shot costs nothing, Spirit Bond heals you and your pet, and you only drink when your shots have used up your mana.
- Feign Death. From level 30, a bad pull is rarely a death: feign, wait for the mobs to leave, revive your pet if you need to.
- Speed. Aspect of the Cheetah (level 20) makes you faster before your mount, and Aspect of the Pack (40) speeds up your whole group.
Weaknesses
- A minimum range. Your shots work from 8 yards out, so a mob in your face needs Wing Clip, Raptor Strike or a step back.
- Ammo and pet food. You have to keep buying both, and running out in the middle of a zone is painful.
- Mana. Every shot except Auto Shot costs mana, so long fights drain you.
- Pet upkeep. A dead pet means Revive Pet, which costs time and mana.
- Slow levels 1 to 9. You don't have a pet until Tame Beast at level 10.

WoW Forever gives you your first talent point at level 10 and one more every level after that - 51 points by 60. Each row of a tree needs 5 more points in that tree before it opens, so the bottom row of the Beast Mastery tree, Bestial Wrath, needs 30 points in that tree. Talents that teach a new ability put it straight into your spellbook.
Levels 10 to 20: Deadly Aspects and your first pet
Points: 11, all Beast Mastery - level 20 build.
- 10-14: Deadly Aspects 5/5. "While Aspect of the Hawk is active, Auto Shot has a 10% chance of increasing ranged attack speed by 30% for 12 sec. While Aspect of the Beast is active, all melee auto attacks have a 10% chance of increasing melee attack speed by 30% for 12 sec." You learn Aspect of the Hawk at level 10, so this pays off from your very first talent point.
- 15-16: Focused Fire 2/2. "Increases all damage you and your pet deal by 2% while your pet is active." Two points for 2% more damage from both of you, all the time.
- 17-19: Endurance Training 3/5. "Increases the Health and Armor of your pets by 9%." A tougher pet holds threat longer and needs fewer Mend Pets.
- 20: Unleashed Fury 1/5. "Increases the damage done by your pets and hawks by 3%."
Tame Beast, Call Pet, Feed Pet and Revive Pet all arrive at level 10. Tame a beast close to your level. Check our Hunter quest page for the class quests in your zone.
Why not Lethal Attacks first? Five points for 5% crit is good, but it's in Marksmanship, and every point you put there now delays Bestial Wrath. Beast Mastery's early talents make your pet - your tank - stronger, which matters more at this level.
Levels 21 to 30: Unleashed Fury, Ferocity and Bestial Swiftness
Points: 10, all Beast Mastery - level 30 build.
- 21-24: Unleashed Fury 5/5. "Increases the damage done by your pets and hawks by 15%." Your pet does much of your damage, so this is one of the best talents in the build.
- 25-29: Ferocity 5/5. "Increases the critical strike chance of your pets and hawks by 10%." Ten percent more crit on your pet - and pet crits power Frenzy later.
- 30: Bestial Swiftness. "Increases the movement speed of your pets by 30%." Your pet reaches mobs faster, and it unlocks Intimidation.
This is also when Aimed Shot (20), Freezing Trap and Disengage (20), Scorpid Sting (22), Rapid Fire (26) and Feign Death (30) arrive. Aimed Shot and Multi-Shot share a cooldown, so use whichever suits the fight.
Why Ferocity over Summon Hawk? Summon Hawk is a new Beast Mastery talent, but it shares its cooldown with Arcane Shot, so it replaces a shot rather than adding one. Ferocity makes every pet attack better.
Levels 31 to 40: Intimidation, Frenzy and Bestial Wrath
Points: 10, all Beast Mastery - level 40 build.
- 31: Intimidation. "Command your pet to Stun the target for 3 sec on its next successful attack, which also gains 100% increased critical strike chance. Generates high threat." A stun with high threat - perfect for pulling a mob off you and back onto your pet.
- 32-33: Spirit Bond 2/2. "While your pet is active, you and your pet will regenerate 1% of total health every 5 sec." Free healing for both of you between and during fights.
- 34: Endurance Training 4/5. The 25th Beast Mastery point, which opens the sixth row.
- 35-39: Frenzy 5/5. "Gives your pet a 100% chance to gain a 30% attack speed increase for 8 sec after dealing a critical strike." With Ferocity, your pet now gets this attack speed boost very often.
- 40: Bestial Wrath. "Send your pet into a rage causing 50% additional damage for 18 sec. While enraged, the beast does not feel pity or remorse or fear and it cannot be stopped unless killed." Your pet's big cooldown - use it on elites, rares and big pulls.
Bestial Wrath needs Intimidation and 30 points in Beast Mastery, so 40 is the earliest you can take it. Volley arrives at 40 and Aspect of the Pack at 40.
Levels 41 to 50: Bestial Discipline and Lethal Attacks
Points: 10 - 3 Beast Mastery, 7 Marksmanship - level 50 build.
- 41: Endurance Training 5/5. "Increases the Health and Armor of your pets by 15%."
- 42-43: Bestial Discipline 2/2. "Increases the Focus regeneration of your pets by 20% and allows 50% of your Mana regeneration to continue while casting." More Focus for your pet's attacks, and mana regeneration that keeps going while you shoot.
- 44-48: Lethal Attacks 5/5 (Marksmanship). "Increases your critical strike chance with all attacks by 5%." With Beast Mastery done, crit is the best way to add your own damage.
- 49-50: Efficiency 2/5. "Reduces the Mana cost of your Shots, Stings, and melee abilities by 6%."
Why switch to Marksmanship now? The rest of the Beast Mastery tree is utility - Pathfinding, Improved Aspect of the Monkey and Improved Revive Pet - and the first rows of Marksmanship add more damage and mana.
Levels 51 to 60: Efficiency, Rapid Killing and Improved Stings
Points: 10 - 8 Marksmanship, 2 Beast Mastery - level 60 build.
- 51-53: Efficiency 5/5. "Reduces the Mana cost of your Shots, Stings, and melee abilities by 15%."
- 54-55: Rapid Killing 2/2. "Reduces the cooldown on your Rapid Fire ability by 2 min. In addition, when you kill a non-trivial enemy or it dies while afflicted by your Serpent Sting, you gain Rapid Killing, increasing the damage of your next Shot ability within 20 sec by 20%." Rapid Fire twice as often, and your first shot on the next mob hits harder.
- 56-58: Improved Stings 3/3. "Increases the damage of your Serpent Sting ability by 20%, reduces the cooldown of your Viper Sting ability by 6 sec, and increases the duration of your Scorpid Sting ability by 45 sec." Serpent Sting is on every mob, so this is free damage.
- 59-60: Improved Mend Pet 2/2 (Beast Mastery). "Gives your Mend Pet spell a 50% chance of cleansing 1 Curse, Disease, Magic, or Poison effect from your pet each time it heals and reduces the Mana cost by 20%."
At 60 you have 36/15/0: Bestial Wrath, Frenzy and Unleashed Fury for your pet, and crit and mana from Marksmanship for you. Try it on our rotation simulator.
Hunter leveling rotation
A Hunter's rotation is simple, and it changes only a little as you level. The key is letting your pet get threat first:
- Levels 1-9: Auto Shot, Serpent Sting (4) and Arcane Shot (6), Raptor Strike when a mob reaches you.
- Levels 10-19: Aspect of the Hawk, send your pet in, Hunter's Mark (6), Serpent Sting, Arcane Shot and Auto Shot. Mend Pet (12) between fights.
- Levels 20-39: as above, plus Aimed Shot while your pet runs in, and Multi-Shot (18) when two or three mobs are on your pet.
- Levels 40-60: the same, with Bestial Wrath and Rapid Fire for elites, and Intimidation to stun a mob that turns on you.
- When things go wrong: Wing Clip (12), step back and shoot; Freezing Trap a second mob; Feign Death if everything is on you.
Keep Aspect of the Hawk on while you fight and Aspect of the Cheetah on while you travel - but switch back before the pull, because Cheetah dazes you if you take damage.

Hunter leveling tips and tricks
- Let your pet pull. Send it in first and wait a moment before your big shots, so the mob stays on your pet.
- Mind your minimum range. Stay more than 8 yards from the mob so all your shots work.
- Freezing Trap the second mob. Drop it at your feet, then pull - the second mob runs into it.
- Feign Death to reset bad pulls. It also drops you out of combat so you can drink or revive your pet.
- Cheetah between quests, Hawk before the pull. Cheetah dazes you when you're hit.
- Group up for dungeons. Hunters bring strong ranged damage, and Multi-Shot helps on packs.
Should you level as Marksmanship or Survival instead?
You can. Marksmanship has more shot damage and Lone Wolf for Hunters who don't want a pet, and Survival is a melee-and-traps spec with Strider Kick, Counterattack and Lacerating Strikes. Both work, but Beast Mastery's stronger pet means you take less damage and kill faster on your own. See our Marksmanship and Survival class guides for those specs at 60.
