This WoW Forever Shaman leveling guide takes you from level 1 to 60 the fast way: as Enhancement, with a weapon imbue, a Stormstrike and a Shock on every mob, and Maelstrom Weapon turning your swings into instant Lightning Bolts. It covers the full Shaman leveling talent build - every one of the 51 points, level by level - the reasons behind each choice, your melee and totem rotation, the spells to train, the consumables worth carrying, where to quest, and the tips that make a Shaman one of the most self-sufficient classes to level in World of Warcraft: Forever.
Shamans changed a lot from the original game. Enhancement now turns Intellect into Attack Power with Mental Dexterity, Stormstrike boosts your next Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning or Earth Shock, and new talents such as Maelstrom Weapon, Improved Stormstrike and Rage of the Farseer change how the spec plays. Fire Nova is now a spell that explodes your Fire totem, and Call of the Elements drops up to four totems at once. This guide uses the latest talent trees, from WoW Forever beta client build 1.60.1.70630.

Shaman strengths and weaknesses while leveling
Before the build, it helps to know what you're working with. A Shaman is a melee class that can heal itself, cast spells and drop totems - which makes it very hard to stop.
Strengths
- Self-healing. Healing Wave and, from level 20, Lesser Healing Wave mean you can heal yourself to full after a fight.
- Tough for a melee class. You can block with a shield, Stoneskin Totem cuts Physical damage, and Lightning Shield hits back every time you're hit.
- Weapon imbues. Rockbiter Weapon from level 1, Flametongue Weapon from 10 and Windfury Weapon from 30 add a lot of damage for a single cast.
- Shocks. Earth Shock (4) interrupts casters, Flame Shock (10) adds damage over time, and Frost Shock (20) stops runners.
- Ghost Wolf and Reincarnation. Ghost Wolf (20) speeds you up outdoors, and from 30 Reincarnation lets you come back to life on the spot.
Weaknesses
- Mana. Shocks, totems, imbues and heals all cost mana, and Enhancement has no free ranged attack.
- Totem upkeep. Totems have to be dropped again after you move on - a lot of buttons to press.
- Slow before 20. Without Ghost Wolf and Stormstrike, early Shaman leveling is steady rather than fast.
- Weapon-dependent. Flametongue and Windfury both reward a slow, hard-hitting weapon, so weapon upgrades matter a lot.

WoW Forever gives you your first talent point at level 10 and one more every level after that - 51 points by 60. Each row of a tree needs 5 more points in that tree before it opens, so the bottom row of the Enhancement tree, Rage of the Farseer, needs 30 points in that tree. Talents that teach a new ability put it straight into your spellbook.
Levels 10 to 20: Thundering Strikes, Mental Dexterity and Ghost Wolf
Points: 11, all Enhancement - level 20 build.
- 10-14: Thundering Strikes 5/5. "Improves your chance to get a critical strike with all spells and attacks by 5%." Five percent more crit on melee and spells - and crits power Flurry later.
- 15-17: Mental Dexterity 3/3. "Increases your Attack Power by an amount equal to 100% of your Intellect." Every point of Intellect is now Attack Power too, so gear with Intellect is a damage upgrade.
- 18-19: Improved Ghost Wolf 2/2. "Reduces the cast time of your Ghost Wolf spell by 3.0 sec, and Ghost Wolf may be used indoors." Ghost Wolf has a 3 second cast, so at 2/2 it becomes instant when you learn it at 20.
- 20: Elemental Weapons 1/3. "Increases the melee attack power bonus of your Rockbiter Weapon by 7%, your Windfury Weapon effect by 13% and increases the damage caused by your Flametongue Weapon and Frostbrand Weapon by 5%."
At 10 you learn Flame Shock, Searing Totem, Flametongue Weapon and Strength of Earth Totem. At 20 come Ghost Wolf, Frost Shock, Lesser Healing Wave, Healing Stream Totem, Frostbrand Weapon and Call of the Elements: "Simultaneously places up to 4 totems specified in the Totem Bar."
Why Improved Ghost Wolf before 20? Because the moment you learn Ghost Wolf, it's instant. An instant 40% speed boost on every trip between quests saves more time than any damage talent at this level.
Levels 21 to 30: Stormstrike and Flurry
Points: 10, all Enhancement - level 30 build.
- 21-22: Elemental Weapons 3/3. "Increases the melee attack power bonus of your Rockbiter Weapon by 20%, your Windfury Weapon effect by 40% and increases the damage caused by your Flametongue Weapon and Frostbrand Weapon by 15%."
- 23-24: Ancestral Knowledge 2/5. "Increases your Intellect by 4%." More Intellect is more mana and - with Mental Dexterity - more Attack Power.
- 25: Stormstrike. "Instantly strike for normal weapon damage and increase the damage you deal to the target with your next Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning, or Earth Shock spell by 20% for 12 sec." Stormstrike, then Earth Shock, is your main burst from now on.
- 26-30: Flurry 5/5. "Increases your attack speed by 25% for your next 3 swings after dealing a melee critical strike." With Thundering Strikes, this is up a lot of the time.
Totemic Projection arrives at 22, Magma Totem and Mana Spring Totem at 26, and Windfury Weapon and Reincarnation at 30.
Why Stormstrike at 25? Row four opens at 15 points in Enhancement, and Stormstrike is the talent that makes Enhancement feel like Enhancement - a second big attack that boosts your Shocks.
Levels 31 to 40: Mental Quickness, Improved Stormstrike and Maelstrom Weapon
Points: 10, all Enhancement - level 40 build.
- 31-32: Mental Quickness 2/2. "Increases your spell damage and healing by up to 30% of your Intellect." Bigger heals and Shocks from your Intellect.
- 33: Shamanistic Focus. "Reduces the mana cost of your Shock and Lightning Shield spells by 45%." Your Shocks and Lightning Shield cost almost half as much.
- 34-35: Improved Stormstrike 2/2. "When you Stormstrike, you have a 100% chance to gain 50% mana regeneration while casting spells for 15 sec, and Stormstrike's cooldown has a 100% chance to reset each time you Dodge or Parry." Mana regeneration while you fight, and more Stormstrikes.
- 36-40: Maelstrom Weapon 5/5. "When you deal damage with a melee attack, you have a chance to reduce the cast time and Mana cost of your next Lightning Bolt spell by 20%. Stacks up to 5 times. Lasts 30 sec." Five stacks add up to 100%: an instant, free Lightning Bolt.
Chain Lightning arrives at 32, Windfury Totem at 32, and Chain Heal at 40.
Why not Toughness first? Ten percent Stamina is good, but Maelstrom Weapon and Rage of the Farseer add much more damage, and with Lightning Shield and self-heals you rarely need the extra health before 40.
Levels 41 to 50: Rage of the Farseer, Ancestral Knowledge and Toughness
Points: 10, all Enhancement - level 50 build.
- 41: Rage of the Farseer. "Increases your attack speed by 30% for 25 sec." Your big cooldown - use it on elites and big pulls.
- 42-44: Ancestral Knowledge 5/5. "Increases your Intellect by 10%."
- 45-49: Toughness 5/5. "Increases your Stamina by 10%."
- 50: Spirit Weapons. "Gives a chance to parry enemy melee attacks, reduces all threat generated by your attacks by 30% while Rockbiter Weapon is not active, and increases all threat generated by 30% while Rockbiter Weapon is active."
Rage of the Farseer needs Mental Quickness and 30 points in Enhancement, so 41 is the earliest this build can take it. Grace of Air Totem arrives at 42.
Levels 51 to 60: Anticipation and Elemental's Concussion
Points: 10 - 3 Enhancement, 7 Elemental - level 60 build.
- 51-53: Anticipation 3/3. "Increases your chance to dodge by an additional 6%."
- 54-58: Concussion 5/5 (Elemental). "Increases the damage done by your Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning, and Earth Shock spells by 5%." More damage on the Lightning Bolts from Maelstrom Weapon and on Earth Shock.
- 59-60: Convection 2/5. "Reduces the mana cost of your Shock, Lightning Bolt, Lava Burst, and Chain Lightning spells by 4%."
At 60 you have 7/44/0: a full Enhancement build with Stormstrike, Flurry, Maelstrom Weapon and Rage of the Farseer, plus more Lightning Bolt and Shock damage from Elemental. Try it on our rotation simulator.
Shaman leveling rotation
An Enhancement Shaman's rotation mixes melee, Shocks and the occasional spell:
- Levels 1-9: Rockbiter Weapon, Lightning Bolt to pull, melee, Earth Shock (4) to finish. Lightning Shield from 8.
- Levels 10-24: Flametongue Weapon, Lightning Bolt to pull, Flame Shock, melee, Earth Shock. Searing Totem on tougher mobs.
- Levels 25-35: Stormstrike on cooldown, Earth Shock right after it, Flame Shock when Earth Shock is on cooldown. Windfury Weapon from 30.
- Levels 36-60: the same, plus an instant Lightning Bolt at five Maelstrom Weapon stacks, and Rage of the Farseer on big pulls.
- When things go wrong: Frost Shock a runner, Earthbind Totem (6), Healing Wave or Lesser Healing Wave, and Reincarnation if all else fails.
Totems for Shaman leveling
Totems are a big part of a Shaman's power, but they cost mana and stay behind when you move on. Use the ones that matter for the pull in front of you:
- Strength of Earth Totem (10): "Summons a Strength of Earth Totem with 5 health at the feet of the caster. The totem increases the strength of party or raid members within 30 yards by 7. Lasts 5 min." Your default Earth totem while questing.
- Stoneskin Totem (4): "Summons a Stoneskin Totem with 5 health at the feet of the caster. The totem protects party members within 30 yards, reducing Physical damage taken by 4. Lasts 5 min." Swap to it for elites and big pulls.
- Searing Totem (10): "Summons a Searing Totem with 5 health at your feet for 30 sec that repeatedly attacks an enemy within 20 yards for 9 to 11 Fire damage." Extra damage on a single tough mob.
- Magma Totem (26): "Summons a Magma Totem with 5 health at the feet of the caster for 20 sec that causes 20 Fire damage to creatures within 8 yards every 2 seconds." Your AoE totem for packs - and Fire Nova explodes from it too.
- Healing Stream Totem (20): "Summons a Healing Stream Totem with 5 health at the feet of the caster for 5 min that heals group members within 30 yards for 5 every 2 seconds."
- Mana Spring Totem (26): "Summons a Mana Spring Totem with 5 health at the feet of the caster for 5 min that restores 4 mana every 2 seconds to group members within 30 yards." Drop it when you sit down to drink.
- Windfury Totem (32) and Grace of Air Totem (42): mostly for groups with other melee players.
Don't drop every totem on every mob - a single quest mob dies before most totems pay for their mana. Save the full set, placed in one cast with Call of the Elements, for elites, packs and dungeon pulls, and pick them back up with Totemic Recall.

Shaman leveling tips and tricks
- Imbue before every zone. Weapon imbues last 60 minutes - recast them when you leave town.
- Stormstrike, then Shock. Stormstrike boosts your next Earth Shock or Lightning Bolt by 20%.
- Earth Shock interrupts. Use it on caster mobs rather than as pure damage when they start a big spell.
- Call of the Elements for big pulls. One cast drops all your totems.
- Totemic Recall. Returns your totems to the earth, giving you 25% of the mana required to cast each totem destroyed by Totemic Recall.
- Ghost Wolf everywhere outdoors. It's instant with Improved Ghost Wolf.
- Group up for dungeons. Totems and Windfury Totem help every melee player in your group.
Should you level as Elemental or Restoration instead?
You can. Elemental has Lava Burst, Lightning Overload and Elemental Mastery and kills quickly from range, but runs out of mana much sooner. Restoration has Water Shield, Riptide and Mana Tide Totem and is a strong dungeon healer, but kills slowly alone. Enhancement's mix of melee, Shocks and heals keeps you going longest between drinks. See our Elemental and Restoration class guides for those specs at 60.
