What is the best DPS class in WoW Forever? It's the question every returning player asks before launch on November 4, and it's harder to answer than it looks. Classes changed a lot from Classic, the racials changed again on October 26, and the answer depends on whether you're asking about a one-minute burst, a three-minute boss fight, your first week at level 60 in dungeon gear, or levelling to 30.
So we ran the numbers for every case. We simulated all 20 damage specs in our sim engine, in their best race with the new October 26 racials, and then ranked the nine classes by their best DPS spec. The short answer: Mage is the best DPS class in WoW Forever. Arcane Mage tops our raid sims in short fights and long ones, and in dungeon gear too. But the rest of the order moves a lot from one situation to the next - and that's where choosing a class gets interesting.

Best DPS class in WoW Forever: the short answer
- Best DPS class overall: Mage. Arcane does 681.9 DPS in raid gear in our sims - 12% more than the next class.
- Top five classes in a short raid fight: Mage (681.9), Priest (610.1), Hunter (589.9), Warlock (566.5) and Warrior (504.7).
- Best DPS class for long boss fights: Mage again (563.9 over three minutes), then Warlock (502.1) and Hunter (494.0). Priest drops from second to fifth because it runs out of mana.
- Best DPS class in dungeon gear: Mage (457.1), with Hunter right behind (454.1).
- Best DPS class for levelling: Hunter. Beast Mastery does 148.3 DPS at level 30, far ahead of everyone else.
- Best melee DPS class: Warrior (Fury), fourth or fifth in every level 60 ranking.
How we ranked the best DPS classes
Every number in this article comes from our own sim engine - the same one behind our rotation simulator, Find Upgrades and the spec rankings on our home page. It uses the WoW Forever beta client's own data: every spell rank, talent and item. Here's exactly what we did:
- Every damage spec at level 60, in its own BiS List gear: the Raid List (the best epic item in every slot) and the Dungeon List (the best rare items, what you'll wear first).
- Default talents and the best race for each spec, with the racial changes Blizzard announced on October 26 - Human crit cut to 1%, Orc Command back, Dwarf hit, Skyborne haste at 2%.
- A single boss three levels higher, 1,000 fights per spec. We ran 60-second fights, our standard, and 3-minute fights, closer to a real raid boss.
- Level 30 in the same standard gear for every spec of a role, to see which classes are strongest while levelling.
- Each class is ranked by its best spec in each situation. A class with three strong specs also gets credit in the class sections below.
What isn't included matters just as much: no consumables like mana potions, no enchants, no world buffs, no buffs from other players, no movement and no adds. That makes this a fair comparison of the classes themselves - not a prediction of what a raid meter will show on launch night.
WoW Forever DPS class ranking at level 60
- 1. Mage - Arcane 681.9 DPS (raid gear, 60 s) · Arcane 563.9 (3 min) · Arcane 457.1 (dungeon gear)
- 2. Priest - Shadow 610.1 DPS (raid gear, 60 s) · Shadow 447.0 (3 min) · Shadow 433.0 (dungeon gear)
- 3. Hunter - Beast Mastery 589.9 DPS (raid gear, 60 s) · Beast Mastery 494.0 (3 min) · Beast Mastery 454.1 (dungeon gear)
- 4. Warlock - Demonology 566.5 DPS (raid gear, 60 s) · Destruction 502.1 (3 min) · Destruction 326.2 (dungeon gear)
- 5. Warrior - Fury 504.7 DPS (raid gear, 60 s) · Fury 448.7 (3 min) · Fury 391.0 (dungeon gear)
- 6. Rogue - Assassination 422.6 DPS (raid gear, 60 s) · Assassination 403.0 (3 min) · Assassination 302.5 (dungeon gear)
- 7. Paladin - Retribution 410.9 DPS (raid gear, 60 s) · Retribution 354.8 (3 min) · Retribution 306.7 (dungeon gear)
- 8. Shaman - Enhancement 403.0 DPS (raid gear, 60 s) · Enhancement 364.4 (3 min) · Enhancement 290.0 (dungeon gear)
- 9. Druid - Balance 398.4 DPS (raid gear, 60 s) · Balance 334.9 (3 min) · Balance 299.4 (dungeon gear)
Three things stand out. Ranged classes hold the top four places in raid gear. The gap from first to last is large: our best Mage does about 1.7 times the damage of our best Druid. And the middle of the table - Rogue, Paladin, Shaman and Druid - is packed within 24 DPS, so small changes can reorder it.
Short fights vs long fights: why the order changes
A 60-second fight is the standard way to compare classes, but very few raid bosses die in a minute. Over three minutes, two things happen. First, cooldowns and the Execute phase make up a smaller share of the fight, so every class does less damage per second. Second, some casters run out of mana - and that changes the ranking far more.
In our three-minute sims, the Shadow Priest runs out of mana for 59 seconds, the Fire Mage for 61, the Frost Mage for 36, the Elemental Shaman for 51 and the Marksmanship Hunter for 82. Arcane Mage only runs dry for about 6 seconds, and Warlocks, Beast Mastery Hunters, Rogues and Warriors never do. That's why Warlock climbs to second over three minutes and Priest falls to fifth.
Remember that our sims use no mana potions, runes or help from other players. Real raiders will bring all of those, so the mana problem will be smaller than this - but it won't disappear, and it's the main reason mana-hungry casters feel weaker the longer a fight lasts.
1. Mage - the best DPS class in WoW Forever
Mage is the clearest answer to the best DPS class question. Arcane Mage does 681.9 DPS in raid gear as a Troll, and it stays first in three-minute fights (563.9) and in dungeon gear (457.1). Arcane Blast stacks up to four times and turns your Intellect into spell damage, Arcane Missiles spends that window - free and twice as fast with Missile Barrage - and Forever's new talent spell Arcane Wrath adds 5% of your maximum mana as spell damage. In longer fights Arcane Wrath matters even more, because the spec is built to stay out of trouble with its mana.
The other two specs are strong in short fights - Fire at 556.8 and Frost at 472.0 - but both run out of mana over three minutes in our sims and fall to 341.0 and 353.5. Read our Arcane Wrath guide and the best race for Mages (Troll and Skyborne, half a percent apart).
2. Priest - top-tier burst, but watch your mana
Shadow Priest is the second-best DPS class in a short raid fight, with 610.1 DPS as a Night Elf. Shadowform makes your Shadow crits deal double damage in Forever, your damage over time can crit, and Devouring Plague now has a 24-second cooldown. Mind Flay, Mind Blast, Shadow Word: Pain and Devouring Plague all pull their weight, so the damage doesn't hinge on one spell.
The catch is mana. Over three minutes our Shadow Priest runs dry for 59 seconds and drops to 447.0 DPS - fifth. Priest is also one of only two classes, with Paladin, that has a single damage spec, so it's one bet. In dungeon gear it's third (433.0). See the best race for Priests - Night Elf.
3. Hunter - the most consistent DPS class
If you want a class that's near the top everywhere, it's Hunter. Beast Mastery is third in short raid fights (589.9), third in long ones (494.0), second in dungeon gear (454.1) and first at level 30 by a mile (148.3). In Forever your pet scales with your gear, and the new Summon Hawk sends hawks that keep diving for 18 seconds - together the pet and hawks do more than half of a Beast Mastery Hunter's damage in our raid sim, and none of it costs mana.
The October 26 changes made it even better: Orc's Command adds 5% pet damage, so Orc is now the clear Beast Mastery race. Marksmanship (482.7) is strong in short fights but runs out of mana over three minutes in our sims, and Survival - a melee spec in Forever - sits mid-table (398.3). See the best race for Hunters.
4. Warlock - the best DPS class for long fights after Mage
Warlock is fourth in a 60-second fight but second over three minutes, because it never runs out of mana: Life Tap turns health into mana. Demonology is the best short-fight spec (566.5), with your Succubus scaling with your gear, while Destruction edges ahead in long fights (502.1) with Forever's new Incinerate, which hits 25% harder on an Immolated target. Affliction (483.7) uses the new Wrack channel to boost its other damage over time.
Warlock is also the deepest DPS class after Mage: all three specs are in the top ten in raid gear. In dungeon gear it's fifth (326.2) - it gains the most of any class from epic gear. See the best race for Warlocks - Orc for Affliction and Demonology.
5. Warrior - the best melee DPS class
Fury Warrior is the best melee DPS class in WoW Forever: 504.7 in short raid fights, 448.7 over three minutes, and fourth in dungeon gear (391.0) - ahead of every Warlock there. Whirlwind hits with both weapons in Forever, Bloodthirst scales with your Attack Power, and Heroic Strike is now an instant rage dump instead of a next-swing queue. Execute is Fury's biggest single hit below 20%.
Arms is clearly behind (398.3 in raid gear), but it's a fine levelling spec. Night Elf is the best Warrior race for both - Elune's Light adds more to Fury than to any other spec in our raid sims. See the best race for Warriors.
6. Rogue - steady, mana-free melee
Assassination Rogue is the best Rogue spec (422.6 in raid gear), with Combat close behind (412.9). Assassination is a poison spec - Mutilate hits with both daggers, poisons can crit, and Coup de Grace rewards full Deadly Poison stacks - while Combat's Hack and Slash depends on the weapon you swing. Rogues lose less than most over a long fight (403.0 over three minutes) because energy never runs out.
Blizzard's designers had said Rogues should do the best single-target melee damage, and in our sims they don't yet - Fury Warrior is clearly ahead. That's the kind of thing tuning can change before or after launch. Night Elf is the best race for every Rogue spec; see the best race for Rogues.
7. Paladin - a hybrid that pays its tax
Retribution Paladin does 410.9 DPS in raid gear as a Human. Forever made Retribution much more active: Holy Strike is baseline, Judgement doesn't consume your seal, and Twist of Light lets you swap Seal of Command and Seal of Righteousness after a swing so the next swing echoes the old seal. Over three minutes it's 354.8, and in dungeon gear it's sixth (306.7).
Paladins are hybrids, and Blizzard has said hybrid damage specs should do about 5% less than pure classes - see our hybrid tax article. In return they bring blessings and healing. Retribution is also the weakest class at level 30 in our sims (64.2). See the best race for Paladins.
8. Shaman - Enhancement for melee, strong while levelling
Enhancement Shaman is the best Shaman DPS spec (403.0 in raid gear). Shamans can't dual-wield in Forever, so Enhancement swings a two-hander; Windfury, Stormstrike every 8 seconds and Maelstrom Weapon's free Lightning Bolts do the rest. It's the third-best DPS class at level 30 (89.9), so it levels very well.
Elemental (363.5) was reworked in build 70425 - Lava Burst is now a 20-point talent and Elemental Mastery is back at 31 points - but it runs out of mana in long fights in our sims (241.3 over three minutes). Shamans are hybrids too, and bring totems for the group. See the best race for Shamans.
9. Druid - flexible, but last for damage
Druid is last of the nine for DPS. Balance is its best damage spec (398.4 in raid gear): Eclipse lets Wrath speed up your next Starfires, Omen of Clarity procs twice as often in Moonkin Form, and Innervate keeps you casting. Balance holds up well in long fights - it never runs out of mana in our three-minute sims (334.9).
Feral (287.6) got a big change this month: in Forever, Cat Form attacks scale with your weapon's damage, so your weapon finally matters. Druids are the ultimate hybrid - a Druid can tank, heal and deal damage - and Restoration Druid is the best healer in our sims. See the best race for Druids and our best healer ranking.
Best DPS class for levelling in WoW Forever
At level 30, the order is different again. Hunter is the best DPS class for levelling by a huge margin: Beast Mastery does 148.3 DPS, against 101.9 for Arcane Mage in second and 89.9 for Enhancement Shaman in third. The pet and hawks do most of the work and take hits for you. Warrior (87.5) and Rogue (73.7) follow, while Paladin and Druid are at the bottom. Our best level 30 DPS ranking has every spec.
Best DPS class by playstyle
- Best ranged DPS class: Mage, with Hunter as the most consistent alternative.
- Best melee DPS class: Warrior (Fury). Rogue is next and never runs out of energy.
- Best DPS class for long raid bosses: Mage and Warlock - neither has a serious mana problem in our three-minute sims.
- Our pick for beginners: Hunter. Beast Mastery is near the top in every one of our rankings, levels fastest and never runs out of mana.
- Best DPS class that can also heal or tank: Shaman or Druid - lower damage, more jobs in a group.
How much should you trust a DPS class ranking?
A simulator is only as good as what it can see. Ours models every spell, talent and item from the game's data, but three things can change these results. Tuning: Blizzard can change numbers right up to launch and after - the newest build's game files, which we're still checking, already show changes to Hunter's Mark, Holy Fire and Frost Blast. Real fights: movement, adds and phases punish some classes more than others. Group play: buffs, debuffs and consumables lift every class, and help mana-hungry casters most.
The racials matter less than you might think: after the October 26 changes, the difference between races is mostly 1-2%. Our racial changes article covers what changed.
How the best DPS class changed during the beta
The answer hasn't always been Mage. When we first simulated every spec at level 60 on October 16, Shadow Priest was first and Arcane Mage second. Then build 70425 reworked Arcane Blast - each stack now turns 15% of your Intellect into spell damage - and added Arcane Wrath, and Arcane jumped to the top. The racials have changed twice since: on October 15, the weapon specializations were replaced with generic bonuses, and on October 26 Blizzard pulled several of those back. Each time, the order in the middle of the table shifted; the top three classes stayed the same.
That's a useful lesson for choosing a class: the top of a DPS ranking is fairly stable, but the middle is close enough that one patch can move a class two or three places. If your favourite class is sixth today, it may not be in a month.
Best DPS class in WoW Forever: FAQ
- Is Mage the best DPS class in WoW Forever? In our sims, yes - Arcane Mage is first in raid gear in both short and long fights and first in dungeon gear. Only at level 30 does Hunter beat it.
- What is the best solo DPS class? Hunter. A Beast Mastery Hunter's pet takes hits for you, does a big share of the damage and costs no mana, and it's the strongest levelling class in our level 30 sims.
- What is the best Horde DPS class? Forever loosened the old race and class limits, so every class is open to both factions. Arcane Mage is best as a Troll, and Beast Mastery Hunter as an Orc - both Horde races.
- What is the best Alliance DPS class? Mage again: Skyborne Arcane Mages are less than half a percent behind Trolls. For melee, a Night Elf Fury Warrior is the best Alliance pick.
- Will the best DPS class change after launch? Probably in the details. Blizzard is still tuning classes, and the first raids open on December 9. We'll re-run these sims with every new build.
