GuideBest race for Druids in WoW Forever: Night Elf, Skyborne, Tauren

What is the best race for Druids in WoW Forever? Druids can be Night Elf, Tauren or Skyborne, and the October 26 racial changes touched two of them: Tauren's Endurance no longer gives critical damage - just 5% more health - and Skyborne's haste drops from 3% to 2%. We re-ran Balance, Feral and Restoration in all three races. Night Elf is the best race for every Druid spec at level 60.

Best race for Druids in WoW Forever: the short answer

  • Balance: Night Elf (398.4 DPS in raid gear), ahead of Skyborne (394.3).
  • Feral (Cat): Night Elf (287.6), with Skyborne close (286.9).
  • Restoration: Night Elf (1492.6 HPS), clearly first.
  • Tauren no longer adds damage or healing - but 5% health and up to 60% run speed make it a strong bear tank and levelling race.
  • Druid races in WoW Forever: Night Elf, Tauren and Skyborne.

The October 26 racial changes for Druids

From Blizzard's October 26 development notes:

  • Tauren: Endurance no longer provides "any modifiers beyond 5% increased Health" - the 2% critical damage and healing is gone. Plainsrunning gives 2% movement speed per stack, up to 60%, but no longer while mounted.
  • Skyborne: Wind-Blessed haste 2% (was 3%). Read Leyline (mana and health regeneration) is 50% for 15 seconds, 100% while Attuned; it can't be used while Innervate is active. Skysight is 15% movement speed, 30% while Charged.

Night Elf doesn't change.

How we tested every Druid race

Every number comes from our own sim engine - the same one behind our rotation simulator and spec rankings - with the October 26 racial changes put in. Each spec wears its own BiS List gear (Raid List or Dungeon List) at level 60, or our standard level 30 gear, uses our default talents and fights a boss three levels higher for 60 seconds, 1,000 times per race. We also ran every spec with no racials at all, so each race's bonus can be measured on its own. Numbers are DPS for damage specs and HPS (healing per second, healing a tank and a five-player party, no overhealing) for healers. Feral is simulated in Cat Form, including weapon DPS.

Best race for Balance Druid

Night Elf leads (+2.3%): Elune's Light's 10% crit lands on the opening Starfires. Skyborne was almost level before the change (398.2) and drops to 394.3 with 2% haste. At level 30, though, Skyborne is still the best Balance race (68.0).

  • Level 60, Raid List gear: Night Elf 398.4, Skyborne 394.3, Tauren 389.5
  • Level 60, Dungeon List gear: Night Elf 299.4, Skyborne 296.3, Tauren 292.9
  • Level 30: Skyborne 68.0, Night Elf 66.8, Tauren 66.0

Best race for Feral Druid

Night Elf (+1.2%) and Skyborne (+1.0%) are close for Cat Form damage. Tauren falls from 287.2 to 284.1 DPS without critical damage. For a bear tank, Tauren's 5% health is still the most direct survivability bonus a Druid race has.

  • Level 60, Raid List gear: Night Elf 287.6, Skyborne 286.9, Tauren 284.1
  • Level 60, Dungeon List gear: Night Elf 221.0, Skyborne 220.5, Tauren 218.5
  • Level 30: Night Elf 65.1, Skyborne 64.1, Tauren 63.4

Best race for Restoration Druid

Night Elf is the clear pick (+1.8%). Tauren adds nothing now, and Skyborne sims slightly below a Druid with no racials (-0.7% in raid gear, -6.4% at level 30). At level 30 it casts the same number of spells, but less of Regrowth's heal-over-time lands - we read that as a quirk of how our sim handles Regrowth being recast sooner, not a real penalty.

  • Level 60, Raid List gear: Night Elf 1492.6, Tauren 1466.0, Skyborne 1456.1
  • Level 60, Dungeon List gear: Night Elf 909.7, Tauren 887.4, Skyborne 887.4
  • Level 30: Night Elf 149.6, Tauren 147.1, Skyborne 137.7

What our sims don't show

  • Cooldowns are used on the pull. In a 60-second fight, a 3-minute racial like Berserking, Blood Fury or Elune's Light is used once and covers a large share of the fight. In longer boss fights, cooldowns count for less and passives for more.
  • Utility: Plainsrunning, Skysight and Read Leyline don't count in a boss sim. Read Leyline's regeneration could help a Restoration Druid between pulls - but not while Innervate is active.
  • Tanking: our Feral sim is Cat Form only; bear tanks aren't simulated.
Our take: Night Elf is the best race for Druids in WoW Forever for damage and healing. Skyborne is a close second for Balance and Feral, with some of the best utility in the game. Tauren is now a tank and levelling race - 5% health and a 60% sprint - rather than a damage one.
