What is the best race for Hunters in WoW Forever? Hunters can be seven different races, and the October 26 racial changes touched five of them: Orc gets Command back (+5% pet damage), Dwarfs swap critical damage for 1% hit, Tauren lose their damage bonus, Humans lose half their crit and Skyborne a third of their haste. We re-ran every Hunter spec in every race. Orc is now the best race for Beast Mastery (589.9 DPS), and Night Elf is the best race for Marksmanship and Survival.

Best race for Hunters in WoW Forever: the short answer
- Beast Mastery: Orc (589.9 DPS in raid gear), ahead of Night Elf (581.0).
- Marksmanship: Night Elf (482.7), then Orc (476.4).
- Survival: Night Elf (398.3), then Troll (392.1).
- Best Alliance Hunter race: Night Elf for every spec.
- Hunter races in WoW Forever: Human, Dwarf, Night Elf, Skyborne, Orc, Tauren and Troll.
The October 26 racial changes for Hunters
From Blizzard's October 26 development notes:
- Orc: Savage (1% crit) removed; Command re-added - Warlock and Hunter pets deal 5% more damage.
- Dwarf: Earth Fury (2% critical damage) removed; new Artisan's Precision gives 1% hit with spells and attacks.
- Tauren: Endurance is now just 5% more health - no hit or critical damage bonus. Plainsrunning now gives up to 60% movement speed, but no longer works mounted.
- Human: Ruthless 1% crit (was 2%); The Human Spirit 10% Spirit (was 5%).
- Skyborne: Wind-Blessed 2% haste (was 3%); Read Leyline and Skysight reworked.
Night Elf (Elune's Light) and Troll (Berserking) don't change.
How we tested every Hunter race
Every number comes from our own sim engine - the same one behind our rotation simulator and spec rankings - with the October 26 racial changes put in. Each spec wears its own BiS List gear (Raid List or Dungeon List) at level 60, or our standard level 30 gear, uses our default talents and fights a boss three levels higher for 60 seconds, 1,000 times per race. We also ran every spec with no racials at all, so each race's bonus can be measured on its own. Command adds 5% to the pet's own attacks. We did not apply it to Summon Hawk, which isn't the Hunter's pet - if Blizzard counts hawks too, Orc gains a little more.
Best race for Beast Mastery Hunter
Command is made for Beast Mastery. The pet's attacks are 31.4% of a Beast Mastery Hunter's damage in our raid sim, so Orc gains far more from +5% pet damage than it lost with Savage: 584.9 DPS before the change, 589.9 now (+3.0% over no racials). Night Elf is second (+1.4%).
- Level 60, Raid List gear: Orc 589.9, Night Elf 581.0, Skyborne 576.7, Human 576.6, Troll 576.1, Dwarf 572.8, Tauren 572.8
- Level 60, Dungeon List gear: Orc 454.1, Night Elf 447.0, Dwarf 446.0, Human 444.8, Troll 444.5, Skyborne 443.9, Tauren 441.7
- Level 30: Orc 148.3, Night Elf 145.8, Dwarf 145.4, Human 145.2, Troll 145.0, Skyborne 144.9, Tauren 144.1
Best race for Marksmanship Hunter
Night Elf leads (+3.4%): Elune's Light, 10% more crit for 15 seconds on the pull, suits a spec built around Aimed Shot and Auto Shot. Orc drops to second (476.4, from 481.0) because Marksmanship pets do much less of the damage. In dungeon gear, Troll is almost level with Night Elf.
- Level 60, Raid List gear: Night Elf 482.7, Orc 476.4, Troll 473.3, Skyborne 471.9, Human 471.2, Dwarf 466.7, Tauren 466.7
- Level 60, Dungeon List gear: Night Elf 325.4, Troll 324.3, Orc 319.8, Human 317.7, Dwarf 317.2, Skyborne 316.4, Tauren 314.2
- Level 30: Night Elf 103.2, Skyborne 102.2, Orc 102.2, Troll 102.2, Human 101.1, Dwarf 101.1, Tauren 100.2
Best race for Survival Hunter
Night Elf again (+3.5%), then Troll (+1.9%) and Skyborne (+1.5%).
- Level 60, Raid List gear: Night Elf 398.3, Troll 392.1, Skyborne 390.6, Orc 390.0, Human 389.0, Dwarf 388.0, Tauren 384.8
- Level 60, Dungeon List gear: Night Elf 243.9, Troll 238.8, Skyborne 238.3, Orc 238.3, Human 238.2, Dwarf 236.8, Tauren 235.1
- Level 30: Night Elf 53.7, Human 52.3, Orc 52.3, Dwarf 52.1, Skyborne 51.9, Tauren 51.7, Troll 51.4
Dwarf and Tauren after the change
Dwarf's new 1% hit only helps until you reach the hit cap. Our level 60 raid Hunters are already at the cap, so Artisan's Precision adds nothing to Beast Mastery or Marksmanship there (+0.0%), and +0.8% to Survival. In dungeon gear, where hit is harder to find, it's worth about 1% (+1.0% for Beast Mastery). Tauren no longer has any damage racial, so it sims the same as a Hunter with no racials - but 5% more health and up to 60% movement speed still make it a fine levelling and PvP pick.
What our sims don't show
- Cooldowns are used on the pull. In a 60-second fight, a 3-minute racial like Berserking, Blood Fury or Elune's Light is used once and covers a large share of the fight. In longer boss fights, cooldowns count for less and passives for more.
- Movement and utility don't show up. Skyborne's Read Leyline and Skysight, Tauren Plainsrunning and other utility racials can matter a lot in the open world, but they don't change damage in a single-target sim.
- Beasts: Dwarf's Big Game Hunter and Troll's Beast Slaying (+5% damage against Beasts) don't count against our boss, which isn't a Beast.
