GuideBest race for Warriors in WoW Forever: Night Elf, Skyborne, Orc

What is the best race for Warriors in WoW Forever? Warriors can be every one of the nine races, and the October 26 racial changes touched five of them: Human crit is halved, Orc loses its crit passive, Skyborne haste is cut, Dwarfs swap critical damage for 1% hit, and Tauren lose their critical damage bonus completely. We re-ran Arms and Fury Warrior in every race. Night Elf is the best race for Arms and Fury, and for Fury it isn't close (+4.1% over no racials).

Best race for Warriors in WoW Forever: the short answer

  • Fury Warrior: Night Elf (504.7 DPS in raid gear), then Skyborne (492.9) and Troll (491.8).
  • Arms Warrior: Night Elf (398.3), then Orc (392.6) and Human (390.9).
  • Protection Warrior: racials don't change our tank numbers, but Tauren's Endurance (+5% health) is the only racial in the notes that adds survivability directly.
  • Warrior races in WoW Forever: all nine - Human, Dwarf, Night Elf, Gnome, Skyborne, Orc, Undead, Tauren and Troll.

The October 26 racial changes for Warriors

From Blizzard's October 26 development notes:

  • Human: Ruthless 1% crit (was 2%). The Human Spirit 10% Spirit (was 5%) - no help to a Warrior's damage.
  • Orc: Savage (1% crit) removed. Blood Fury stays.
  • Skyborne: Wind-Blessed haste 2% (was 3%).
  • Dwarf: Earth Fury (2% critical damage) removed; Artisan's Precision adds 1% hit.
  • Tauren: Endurance is now only 5% more health - "no hit chance or critical damage modifiers" - and Plainsrunning goes up to 60% movement speed but no longer works mounted.

How we tested every Warrior race

Every number comes from our own sim engine - the same one behind our rotation simulator and spec rankings - with the October 26 racial changes put in. Each spec wears its own BiS List gear (Raid List or Dungeon List) at level 60, or our standard level 30 gear, uses our default talents and fights a boss three levels higher for 60 seconds, 1,000 times per race. We also ran every spec with no racials at all, so each race's bonus can be measured on its own. Numbers are DPS for Arms and Fury. Protection is left out: our tank number is effective health, and racials aren't part of it.

Best race for Fury Warrior

Night Elf leads by a wide margin: 504.7 DPS against 492.9 for Skyborne. Fury gets a lot from crits, and Elune's Light - 10% more crit for 15 seconds on the pull - adds more to Fury than to any other spec in our raid sims. Human (495.7 to 489.6) and Orc (495.4 to 490.4) both lose ground with their crit nerfs. Dwarf's 1% hit is worth +1.0% - a dual-wielder misses more often, so hit helps Fury more than Arms.

  • Level 60, Raid List gear: Night Elf 504.7, Skyborne 492.9, Troll 491.8, Orc 490.4, Human 489.6, Dwarf 489.5, Gnome 484.7, Undead 484.7, Tauren 484.7
  • Level 60, Dungeon List gear: Night Elf 391.0, Skyborne 381.9, Troll 380.9, Human 379.4, Dwarf 378.6, Orc 378.2, Gnome 373.9, Undead 373.9, Tauren 373.9
  • Level 30: Night Elf 87.5, Human 85.3, Dwarf 85.3, Skyborne 84.9, Troll 84.9, Orc 84.8, Gnome 83.8, Undead 83.8, Tauren 83.8

Best race for Arms Warrior

Night Elf again (+2.5%), then Orc (+1.1%) and Human (+0.6%). Arms has one quirk: with a slow two-hander, haste moves swing timing in a 60-second fight. In raid gear Troll and Skyborne even sim below no racials (-2.3% and -0.7%), while in dungeon gear one extra swing and Execute put them on top (+6.2% and +5.7%). We read both as timing effects of a short fight, not real penalties or bonuses.

  • Level 60, Raid List gear: Night Elf 398.3, Orc 392.6, Human 390.9, Dwarf 388.4, Gnome 388.4, Undead 388.4, Tauren 388.4, Skyborne 385.5, Troll 379.6
  • Level 60, Dungeon List gear: Skyborne 284.4, Troll 283.1, Night Elf 273.5, Orc 270.6, Human 269.8, Dwarf 267.8, Gnome 267.8, Undead 267.8, Tauren 267.8
  • Level 30: Night Elf 83.8, Dwarf 81.9, Human 81.7, Troll 81.3, Orc 81.1, Skyborne 80.4, Gnome 80.2, Undead 80.2, Tauren 80.2

Tauren and Dwarf Warriors after the change

Tauren and Dwarf both lose 2% critical damage. Tauren gets nothing for damage in return, so it now sims the same as a Warrior with no racials (388.4 Arms DPS, down from 393.3). Dwarf gets 1% hit, which helps Fury and helps a lot at level 30, where it's the second-best Arms race (+2.1%).

Best race for Protection Warrior

Our tank sims measure effective health and don't include racials, so we can't rank Protection races with numbers. From the October 26 notes, Tauren's Endurance - 5% more health - is the one racial that adds survivability directly, and Dwarf's 1% hit makes your attacks, and so your threat, a little more reliable.

What our sims don't show

  • Not simulated: Gnome's Eureka! (8 seconds of +10% damage and -10% cost every 2 minutes) and Undead's Touch of the Dead, whose damage Blizzard hasn't published. Gnome and Undead may be a little better than these numbers show.
  • Cooldowns are used on the pull. In a 60-second fight, a 3-minute racial like Berserking, Blood Fury or Elune's Light is used once and covers a large share of the fight. In longer boss fights, cooldowns count for less and passives for more.
  • Rage: Gnome's Expansive Mind isn't simulated for Warriors.
Our take: Night Elf is the best race for DPS Warriors in WoW Forever, especially Fury. After Night Elf, Orc is the best Arms pick, while Skyborne and Troll are best for Fury. Tauren is now a tank and PvP race - 5% health and a 60% sprint - rather than a damage one.
