What is the best race for Mages in WoW Forever? Blizzard changed the racials again on October 26, a week before launch: Skyborne's haste was cut from 3% to 2%, Human crit from 2% to 1%, and Orc lost its 1% crit passive. We put the new values into our simulator and ran every Mage spec in every race it can play. The answer: Troll and Skyborne are the best Mage races, less than half a percent apart - Troll leads for Arcane (681.9 DPS) and Frost, Skyborne for Fire.

Best race for Mages in WoW Forever: the short answer
- Arcane Mage: Troll (681.9 DPS in raid gear), then Skyborne (680.5) and Human (675.1).
- Fire Mage: Skyborne (556.8), with Troll a hair behind (556.4).
- Frost Mage: Troll (472.0), then Skyborne (471.4).
- Biggest change: Skyborne was our best Arcane and Frost race before October 26. With 2% haste instead of 3%, it drops just behind Troll.
- Mage races in WoW Forever: Human, Gnome, Skyborne, Orc, Undead and Troll.
The October 26 racial changes for Mages
Blizzard's October 26 development notes say the team prioritised "racial identity" in a final pass before launch, and did "a tuning pass on some of the remaining passive bonuses". For Mages, three changes matter:
- Skyborne: Wind-Blessed haste goes from 3% to 2%. Read Leyline (mana and health regeneration) is cut from 100% to 50% for 15 seconds, but goes back to 100% for an hour after you use it at a Ley Line.
- Human: Ruthless goes from 2% to 1% crit, and The Human Spirit from 5% to 10% Spirit.
- Orc: Savage (1% crit) is removed. Blood Fury stays. Command - +5% pet damage - only helps Warlocks and Hunters.
Troll (Berserking), Gnome (Expansive Mind and Eureka!) and Undead (Touch of the Dead) don't change.
How we tested every Mage race
Every number comes from our own sim engine - the same one behind our rotation simulator and spec rankings - with the October 26 racial changes put in. Each spec wears its own BiS List gear (Raid List or Dungeon List) at level 60, or our standard level 30 gear, uses our default talents and fights a boss three levels higher for 60 seconds, 1,000 times per race. We also ran every spec with no racials at all, so each race's bonus can be measured on its own.
Best race for Arcane Mage
Troll and Skyborne are almost tied: 681.9 and 680.5 DPS in raid gear, +2.3% and +2.1% over no racials. Berserking's 10% casting speed for 10 seconds lands right in Arcane's opening burst, while Skyborne's 2% haste helps all fight long. Human and Gnome are next, and Undead adds nothing we can simulate.
- Level 60, Raid List gear: Troll 681.9, Skyborne 680.5, Human 675.1, Gnome 674.8, Orc 672.9, Undead 666.8
- Level 60, Dungeon List gear: Troll 457.1, Skyborne 456.0, Human 452.8, Gnome 452.2, Orc 451.4, Undead 448.6
- Level 30: Troll 101.9, Skyborne 101.7, Gnome 101.6, Human 101.0, Orc 100.8, Undead 100.3
Before October 26, Skyborne was the clear Arcane pick (686.4 DPS); the haste cut costs it 5.9 DPS.
Best race for Fire Mage
Fire is the closest race of all: Skyborne 556.8, Troll 556.4, Human 552.9 and Orc 552.5 in raid gear. Human was our best Fire race before the change (557.5); losing 1% crit drops it to third.
- Level 60, Raid List gear: Skyborne 556.8, Troll 556.4, Human 552.9, Orc 552.5, Gnome 550.3, Undead 547.7
- Level 60, Dungeon List gear: Troll 367.6, Skyborne 367.5, Human 363.3, Orc 362.8, Gnome 361.2, Undead 360.5
- Level 30: Gnome 69.4, Human 67.5, Orc 67.2, Undead 66.8, Skyborne 65.9, Troll 65.8
At level 30, Gnome comes first (69.4). Our level 30 Fire Mage casts as many Fireballs as its mana allows, so Gnome's 5% extra mana buys about one more Fireball per fight, while extra casting speed has little to spend. Troll and Skyborne even sim slightly below a Mage with no racials at 30 - we read that as fight-timing noise, not a real penalty.
Best race for Frost Mage
Troll (472.0) and Skyborne (471.4) again, with Orc (465.6) and Human (465.0) about 1.5% behind. In dungeon gear Skyborne edges ahead (322.2 to 321.9).
- Level 60, Raid List gear: Troll 472.0, Skyborne 471.4, Orc 465.6, Human 465.0, Gnome 461.2, Undead 461.2
- Level 60, Dungeon List gear: Skyborne 322.2, Troll 321.9, Human 317.4, Orc 316.9, Gnome 314.8, Undead 314.8
- Level 30: Human 60.2, Orc 60.1, Gnome 59.7, Skyborne 59.7, Undead 59.7, Troll 59.7
What our sims don't show
- Not simulated: Gnome's Eureka! (8 seconds of +10% damage and -10% cost every 2 minutes) and Undead's Touch of the Dead, whose damage Blizzard hasn't published. Gnome and Undead may be a little better than these numbers show.
- Cooldowns are used on the pull. In a 60-second fight, a 3-minute racial like Berserking, Blood Fury or Elune's Light is used once and covers a large share of the fight. In longer boss fights, cooldowns count for less and passives for more.
- Movement and utility don't show up. Skyborne's Read Leyline and Skysight, Tauren Plainsrunning and other utility racials can matter a lot in the open world, but they don't change damage in a single-target sim.
