Arcane Wrath is the new Mage spell everyone is searching for - and the reason Arcane Mage tops our WoW Forever damage rankings. Here's what Arcane Wrath does in WoW Forever, how to get it, its ranks, how it scales, and where it fits in your rotation.

What does Arcane Wrath do in WoW Forever?

Rank 1's tooltip, as shown by WoW Forever Talents: “Launches a projectile of pure Arcane energy at the enemy target, causing 121 to 147 Arcane damage.” “This spell gains additional Spell Damage equal to 5% of your maximum Mana.” The key facts:

  • Cast time: 3.5 seconds. Cooldown: 6 seconds. Range: 30 yards.
  • Scaling: normal spell power, plus extra spell damage equal to 5% of your maximum mana - so Intellect counts twice.
  • Arcane only: it's an Arcane talent, so Fire and Frost Mages don't get it.

How to get Arcane Wrath

Arcane Wrath is a talent in the fourth row of the Arcane tree, which opens at 15 points, and it needs Arcane Blast first, WoW Forever Talents shows. The talent teaches rank 1; the higher ranks come from your Mage trainer. You can plan the build in our WoW Forever talent calculator.

Arcane Wrath ranks

  • Rank 1: level 25, 140 mana
  • Rank 2: level 36, 220 mana
  • Rank 3: level 48, 305 mana
  • Rank 4: level 60, 395 mana

Levels and mana costs are from the build 1.60.1.70532 game files; damage goes up with every rank.

Arcane Wrath in the Arcane Mage rotation

Arcane Mage in Forever works in windows: build Arcane Blast stacks (each turns 15% of your Intellect into spell damage for 15 seconds), then spend the window on Arcane Missiles. Our simulator casts Arcane Wrath whenever its 6-second cooldown is up after your Blasts, with Missile Barrage procs going first. Our Arcane Mage rotation:

  • Arcane Intellect before combat
  • Arcane Blast to 3-4 stacks while mana allows
  • Arcane Power at 3-4 stacks
  • Arcane Missiles to spend the window
  • Arcane Wrath whenever its 6 s cooldown is up after the Blasts
  • Presence of Mind for an instant Arcane Blast
  • Frostbolt as the conserve filler when mana is low
  • Evocation to refill mana

How much damage does Arcane Wrath do?

In our sims, Arcane Wrath does 18% of an Arcane Mage's damage at level 30 (about 2.7 casts a minute) and 13% at level 60 in raid gear. It matters most while levelling: with little spell power, its base damage and its bonus from your mana pool are a big part of your damage. At 60, Arcane Missiles does most of the work, but Arcane Wrath still fits between your Blasts and Missiles every time it's ready.

Arcane Mage is #1 in our level 60 raid rankings at 685 DPS - see our WoW Forever tier list and the Arcane Mage guide.

Tip: because Arcane Wrath scales with maximum mana, Intellect is worth more for Arcane than for Fire or Frost. Check your own numbers in Sim DPS: the damage breakdown shows Arcane Wrath on its own line.
Our take: Arcane Wrath gives Arcane Mages something they never had in Classic - a hard-hitting nuke on a short cooldown that rewards a big mana pool. Take it as soon as the fourth row opens, and press it whenever it's ready. It's a beta spell, so its numbers can still change before launch.
