GuideBest profession for Paladins in WoW Forever: Blacksmithing, Mining and Alchemy

What is the best profession for Paladins in WoW Forever? Most guides give the same one-line answer - Blacksmithing and Mining - and for most Paladins that's right. But WoW Forever changes the reasons behind it. There are hundreds of new recipes, the best crafted plate now needs Legionite Bars that only Alchemists can make, every profession builds a camp feature, and Healing Potions have moved to First Aid.

So instead of repeating the usual advice, we went through the data. We counted every crafted item in our Holy, Retribution and Protection Paladin BiS lists - at level 50, in pre-raid gear at 60 and in raid gear - and checked which ones are Binds when picked up (you have to make them yourself) and which are Binds when equipped (you can buy them from someone else). That one detail decides which Paladin professions in WoW Forever are worth it, and when.

Best profession for Paladins in WoW Forever: the short answer

  • Best profession for Paladins overall: Blacksmithing + Mining. Blacksmithing makes 26 of the 28 crafted items in our Holy pre-raid BiS list, 22 of 25 for Retribution and 25 of 29 for Protection.
  • Why Blacksmithing matters: many of the best pre-raid pieces are Binds when picked up - like Holy's whole Prefect's set - so only a Blacksmith can wear them.
  • Once you raid: every crafted item in our three Paladin Raid lists is Binds when equipped. You can buy all of them, so Holy Paladins can switch to Alchemy + Herbalism for flasks and mana potions.
  • The hidden bottleneck: Legionite Bars. The best new plate needs up to 20 of them, and each one is an Alchemy transmute with a 47-hour cooldown.
  • Every Paladin: level First Aid (it now makes Healing Potions) and Cooking (it builds the campfire).

How we picked the best profession for Paladins

Every Paladin spec on our site has a BiS list with up to four ranked picks per slot, for level 40, level 50, pre-raid gear at 60 and raid gear at 60, built from the WoW Forever game files (build 1.60.1.70532). For this guide we took every crafted item in those lists and noted two things: which profession makes it, and how it binds.

Binding is what matters most. A Binds when equipped (BoE) item can be crafted by anyone and sold on the auction house, so you don't need the profession - just the gold. A Binds when picked up (BoP) item is soulbound to the crafter, so the only way to wear it is to make it yourself. A profession that makes BoP gear for your spec is worth far more than one that only makes BoE gear.

Bar chart of crafted items in WoW Forever Paladin BiS lists: Holy 20 crafted at level 50 (19 BoP), 28 pre-raid (17 BoP), 5 raid (0 BoP); Retribution 18 (15 BoP), 25 (5 BoP), 12 (0 BoP); Protection 21 (20 BoP), 29 (11 BoP), 13 (0 BoP)
Crafted items in every Paladin BiS list, split by how they bind. Pink pieces can only be worn by the crafter.

The pattern is the same for all three specs. Around level 50, almost every crafted piece in the lists is BoP - the Prefect's, Officer's and Warder's sets. In pre-raid gear at 60, crafted items fill about half of every list, and a good share are still BoP. In raid gear, far fewer crafted items make the list, and none of them are BoP.

Blacksmithing: the best profession for Paladins in WoW Forever

WoW Forever Blacksmithing has 506 recipes in the current game files, and a large share of them is plate for Paladins. In the three pre-raid lists, Blacksmithing makes 73 of the 82 crafted entries. No other profession has more than one entry in any of them.

The new crafted sets are the reason. Forever adds three lines of plate made by Blacksmiths, each tied to a role:

  • Prefect's - Intellect, healing and Stamina for Holy Paladins.
  • Officer's - Strength, Agility and Stamina for Retribution.
  • Warder's - Defense Rating, spell damage and Stamina for Protection.

Each set comes in boots, sabatons, wristguards, gloves, pauldrons and waistguard, made between skill 200 and 270, and the pieces in our lists are Binds when picked up. They fill the gap from the late 40s into your first weeks at 60, which is exactly when a Paladin has the least gear and the most to gain.

Then come the level 60 recipes. At skill 300, Blacksmiths learn plans for gear with item levels in the 60s - the Evergreen Shield, Forest Defender's Axe, Heavy Thorium Gauntlets and Depleted Thorium Sabatons are all item level 65 - and older Classic recipes like the Lionheart Helm and Titanic Leggings still appear on our lists. Most of these are BoE, which makes them excellent for gold too (more on that below).

Camp bonus: Blacksmithing's first camp feature, the Sharpening Wheel, gives everyone sitting at your camp 6 to 34 Strength for an hour - the top number at level 60. Later Blueprints add the Anvil and Master Forge, so you can craft at camp.

Mining: the best partner for Blacksmithing

Blacksmithing eats metal. Lionheart Helm alone needs 80 Thorium Bars, and so do the Breastplate of Salvation and Stalwart Helm. WoW Forever Mining lets you smelt the three bars the new recipes are built on:

  • Thorium Bar at skill 250 - the base of the Prefect's, Officer's and Warder's sets.
  • Azerothium Bar at skill 275 - 2 Pitchblende and 1 Coal. It's used in the Enriched Thorium plate and Stormcarver.
  • Heavy Thorium Bar at skill 300 - from Heavy Thorium Ore. The new item level 65 plans, like Evergreen Shield and Forest Defender's Axe, need 10 to 20 of them.

Mining is also the gathering profession that pays for your crafting. Even if you only make gear for yourself, every bar you smelt is one you don't have to buy. And its camp feature, the Lodestone, gives up to 90 melee Attack Power to everyone at your camp - a great buff for a Retribution Paladin and the melee in your group.

Holy Paladin profession: Blacksmithing first, Alchemy later

The best profession for Holy Paladins in WoW Forever depends on how far you are. While you level and gear up, it's Blacksmithing - by a long way. Our Holy Paladin BiS list has crafted items as the top pick in 11 slots of its pre-raid gear at 60:

The four Prefect's pieces are the key. Prefect's Gloves give +11 Intellect, +9 Stamina and up to 35 healing; Prefect's Waistguard has +10 Intellect, +13 Stamina and 30 healing. No one can sell them to you. At level 50 it's even clearer: 19 of the 20 crafted items in the Holy list are BoP.

Most Prefect's pieces need Thorium Bars, Solid Grinding Stones and Golden Pearls. The plans for most pieces are recipe items you have to find; the Waistguard is the exception, taught by the profession trainer.

Raiding changes the picture. Our Holy Raid list has only five crafted items, and all of them are BoE: Stalwart Helm, Hide of the Wild, Breastplate of Salvation, Martyr's Legplates and Forest Defender's Axe. Once you raid, Blacksmithing gives you nothing you couldn't buy.

That's when Alchemy + Herbalism becomes the better Holy Paladin profession. Holy runs on mana, and Alchemy makes everything that keeps it going: Flask of Distilled Wisdom, Mageblood Elixir and Major Mana Potions. A Flask of Distilled Wisdom alone takes 30 Dreamfoil, 10 Icecap and a Black Lotus, so Herbalism saves real gold. And the camp features fit Holy too: Alchemy's Mana Well (10 to 29 mana every 5 seconds) and Herbalism's Incense Candle (2 to 25 Intellect). Gfinity makes the same call for Holy at endgame: Alchemy + Herbalism, because Holy Paladins "burn through mana quickly".

Holy Paladin profession in short: Blacksmithing + Mining from level 40 until your pre-raid set is done, then Alchemy + Herbalism if you raid and want cheaper flasks. If you never plan to drop Blacksmithing, Mining still pays for your potions.

Ret Paladin profession: Blacksmithing, with room to change

Retribution is the spec that needs Blacksmithing the least - at 60. Our Retribution Paladin BiS list has crafted items as the top pick in five pre-raid slots: Lionheart Helm, Officer's Wristguards, Titanic Leggings, Forest Defender's Axe and Ironwood Blade. Only the Wristguards are BoP.

The two best pieces are worth a closer look. Lionheart Helm has +18 Strength, +28 Critical Strike Rating and +20 Hit Rating; Titanic Leggings have +30 Strength, +20 Hit Rating and +14 Critical Strike Rating. They are top picks in our Ret Paladin Raid list too, so they last well past your first raid. Both are BoE - you can buy them.

Levelling is different. At level 50, 15 of the 18 crafted items in our Retribution list are BoP, including Officer's Wristguards and Officer's Sabatons, so Blacksmithing pays off most on the way to 60.

Our Ret Paladin Raid list has 12 crafted items, from Blackfury to Nightfall, and none of them are BoP. So the best profession for a Ret Paladin in raids is open:

  • Stay Blacksmith if you want to make your own Lionheart Helm and Titanic Leggings - and sell them.
  • Switch to Alchemy for Elixir of the Mongoose, Flask of the Titans and your own Arcanite and Legionite transmutes.
  • Switch to Engineering if you like explosives and gadgets - Gfinity picks Engineering + Mining for Retribution and Protection at endgame. We haven't simulated explosives, so we can't put a number on it.

Whatever you pick, keep Mining. The Lodestone's melee Attack Power is the camp buff a Ret Paladin wants most.

Prot Paladin profession: Blacksmithing all the way

Protection gets the most out of Blacksmithing. Our Protection Paladin BiS list has crafted items in 29 pre-raid entries - 25 of them Blacksmithing - and crafted gear is the top pick in nine slots:

That's a full tanking set from one profession: Defense Rating and Stamina on the BoP chest, legs and belt, spell damage for Paladin threat on the helm and belt, and a shield with Stamina and healing. At level 50 the Warder's set does the same job - 20 of the 21 crafted items in that list are BoP.

The catch is materials. The Enriched Thorium Breastplate needs 8 Legionite Bars, 24 Heavy Thorium Bars, 4 Azerothium Bars and 8 essences; the Leggings need 10 Legionite Bars. That is a lot of materials for two pieces - and since they're BoP, you have to make them yourself.

In raids, our Protection list has 13 crafted items and, again, none are BoP. The Force Reactive Disk - an Engineering shield that releases an electrical charge when it blocks - is on the list, but it's BoE too. We'd still keep Blacksmithing + Mining on a Prot Paladin: you can make or replace your own tanking pieces, and sell the BoE plate Warriors want too.

Legionite Bars: why Alchemy matters to every Paladin

This is the biggest change for Paladin professions in WoW Forever. Many of the best new Blacksmithing recipes need Legionite Bars, and Legionite Bars aren't smelted by Miners. They are an Alchemy transmute: one Heavy Thorium Bar and one Fel Crystal, with a 47-hour cooldown in the game files.

Bar chart of Legionite Bars needed for WoW Forever Paladin crafts: Stormcarver 20, Breastplate of Salvation 12, Martyr's Legplates 12, Stalwart Helm 12, Enriched Thorium Leggings 10, Enriched Thorium Breastplate 8, and 1 each for Evergreen Shield, Forest Defender's Axe, Heavy Thorium Gauntlets, Depleted Thorium Sabatons and Ironwood Blade
Legionite Bars needed per craft - and how long one Alchemist would need to transmute them.

The numbers add up fast. One Alchemist with one transmute every 47 hours would need about 24 days to make the 12 bars for a Breastplate of Salvation, and about 39 days for the 20 in a Stormcarver. A Prot Paladin who wants both Enriched Thorium pieces needs 18 bars - more than a month of cooldowns for one Alchemist.

There are three ways around it:

  • Buy Legionite Bars on the auction house. Early on they will be scarce and expensive.
  • Use a guild Alchemist - or several. Three Alchemists cut the wait to a third.
  • Level an Alchemy alt for transmutes. If you play a Paladin Blacksmith seriously, an alt with Alchemy can pay for itself.

The same goes for Arcanite Bars (Thorium Bar + Arcane Crystal, also 47 hours), used in Lionheart Helm, Titanic Leggings and Sageblade. Some Blacksmithing recipes even need potions: Martyr's Legplates take two Flasks of Distilled Wisdom, Titanic Leggings two Flasks of the Titans, and Sageblade two Flasks of Supreme Power. In WoW Forever, Blacksmiths and Alchemists need each other.

Enchanting for Paladins

Enchanting is the third option many Paladins consider. It makes few items in our lists - one in each pre-raid list, like the Twisting Essence Jar off-hand and the Frozen Heart of the Mountain trinket, both BoP - but it gives you the enchants Paladins want:

  • Enchant Weapon - Crusader and Grand Crusader for Retribution.
  • Enchant Weapon - Healing Power, Bracer - Healing Power and Gloves - Healing Power for Holy.
  • Enchant Chest - Major Intellect, Cloak - Superior Defense and Shield - Greater Stamina for every spec.

Most of these need formulas that you have to find, and the best ones are at skill 305 to 320. Enchanters also make Enchanted Thorium Bars (a Thorium Bar and 3 Dream Dust), which Blacksmiths need for Whitesoul Helm and Titanic Leggings. Its camp feature, the Enchanted Lute, adds 28 to 260 Armor - welcome for a tank.

Enchanting needs no gathering profession, but it's slow to level without disenchanting a lot of gear. If you pick it, pair it with Blacksmithing or Mining, not instead of them.

Engineering, Leatherworking and Tailoring

Our lists include a few items from other crafts: the Hide of the Wild cloak (Leatherworking) for Holy, the Force Reactive Disk (Engineering) for Protection, and a few Tailoring cloaks. All of them are BoE, so you can buy them without the profession.

Engineering is the one worth a closer look. Its gadgets and explosives are a classic choice for PvP and for tanks who want extra threat on many targets - the reason Gfinity recommends it for Retribution and Protection. Its camp feature, the Reagent Bot, sells class reagents right at camp. If you raid or PvP a lot, Engineering + Mining is a good second choice after Blacksmithing.

For a different take, Kami Labs built its own BiS lists and picked Blacksmithing + Leatherworking for Paladins. Our lists agree that Blacksmithing comes first but show just one Leatherworking item per spec in pre-raid gear - so we'd keep Mining.

First Aid and Cooking: free picks for every Paladin

These don't take a profession slot, and both matter more in WoW Forever:

  • First Aid now makes Healing Potions - from the basic one up to Major Healing Potion (skill 290). Every Paladin can make their own. Its camp feature, the First Aid Kit, gives 3 to 56 Stamina.
  • Cooking builds the campfire every camp starts with, and makes the food Paladins eat in raids.
  • Fishing feeds Cooking, and its Fish Bowl camp feature gives 8% to all stats.

Best profession for levelling a Paladin

If you just want to get to 60, two gathering professions make the most gold: Mining + Herbalism, or Mining + Skinning. You sell everything you gather, and you'll have money for a mount and your first recipes.

Our pick is still to start Blacksmithing + Mining from the beginning. Crafted plate in the 30s and 40s - Truesilver Gauntlets and the Officer's and Warder's boots - is in our level 40 lists, and having Blacksmithing at 250+ when you hit the late 40s means you can make the Prefect's, Officer's or Warder's pieces right away. Levelling Blacksmithing late is expensive.

Making gold as a Paladin Blacksmith

Paladin Blacksmiths have a lot to sell. Most of the best crafted gear is BoE, and Warriors want much of the same plate as Retribution and Protection Paladins. The items that always sell:

The skill 300 recipes come from Plans you have to find. If you get one early, it can pay for your whole profession.

Best profession for Paladins in WoW Forever: FAQ

  • What is the best profession for Paladins in WoW Forever? Blacksmithing + Mining. Blacksmithing makes almost every crafted piece in all three Paladin BiS lists, including BoP gear no one can sell you.
  • Is Blacksmithing worth it for Holy Paladins? Yes, until your pre-raid gear is done. Four of the Holy top picks at 60 are BoP Prefect's pieces. In raid gear, every crafted item is BoE.
  • What's the best profession for Ret Paladins? Blacksmithing + Mining while levelling. At 60, Ret can switch to Alchemy or Engineering - only Officer's Wristguards are BoP among its top pre-raid picks.
  • What's the best profession for Prot Paladins? Blacksmithing + Mining. Enriched Thorium Breastplate, Enriched Thorium Leggings and Warder's Waistguard are BoP top picks.
  • Do I need Alchemy as a Paladin? Not as your profession, but you'll need Legionite Bars from an Alchemist for the best plate.
  • Do gathering professions give passive bonuses in WoW Forever? Blizzard hasn't confirmed any. Lists of Mining or Herbalism perks have been traced to an AI-generated post - see our professions guide.
Our take: Blacksmithing + Mining is the best profession for Paladins in WoW Forever, and it's not close while you gear up. What's new is how much a Paladin Blacksmith depends on Alchemists - Legionite Bars are the real limit on your best plate. If you plan to raid seriously, make friends with an Alchemist early, or level one yourself. And if you're a Holy Paladin who has finished the Prefect's set, don't feel tied to the anvil: Alchemy + Herbalism will save you more gold in a raid week than Blacksmithing will.
